McDonald’s Boss Steve Easterbrook Fired After Dating Employee

McDonald’s has fired its chief executive Steve Easterbrook after he had a relationship with an employee.

The US fast food giant said the relationship was consensual, but Mr Easterbrook had “violated company policy” and shown “poor judgement”.

The British businessman, who earned nearly $16m (£12.3m) last year, is due to receive 26 weeks of pay.

The full value of the deal was not clear. He is also eligible for a bonus, if the firm hits its performance goals.

In exchange, Mr Easterbrook has agreed not to work for a competitor for at least two years.

In an email to staff, Mr Easterbrook acknowledged the relationship and said it was a mistake.

“Given the values of the company, I agree with the board that it is time for me to move on,” he said.

The company’s top human resources officer has also left the company, McDonald’s said.

Mr Easterbrook, 52, who is divorced, first worked for McDonald’s in 1993 as a manager in London before working his way up the company.

He left in 2011 to become boss of Pizza Express and then Asian food chain Wagamama, before returning to McDonald’s in 2013, eventually becoming its head in the UK and northern Europe.

He was appointed chief executive of McDonald’s in 2015.

Mr Easterbrook is widely credited with revitalising the firm’s menus and restaurants, by remodelling stores and using better ingredients. The value of its shares more than doubled during his tenure in the US.

Under his leadership, McDonald’s also expanded its delivery and mobile payment options to emphasise convenience.

Relationship risks

The fast food giant’s board voted on Watford-born Mr Easterbrook’s departure on Friday after a review. He has also stepped down as McDonald’s president and member of the board.

McDonald’s said it has longstanding rules against conflicts of interest.

It declined to provide further information about the person with whom Mr Easterbrook had the relationship, including whether the person was a direct report or remained employed by the company.

Employment lawyer Ruby Dinsmore, of Slater and Gordon, said it is now common for firms to have either outright bans on relationships, or to have notification clauses requiring individuals to disclose them.

Potential conflicts of interest or litigation if a relationship turns sour were becoming a real risk for companies, she told the BBC.

“Some people may view this an an invasion of privacy,” she said. “But businesses have their own interests to protect as well.”

In the era of MeToo “companies are very keen to be seem not only to have a policy for this type of situation, but also to be seen to be enforcing it at all levels,” she said.

The company has been criticised over the amount it pays shop staff, and Mr Easterbrook faced scrutiny for his $15.9m pay packet in 2018, which included a roughly $1.3m base salary, as well as benefits and bonus.

It was 2,124 times the median employee salary of $7,473.

He will be replaced by Chris Kempczinski, most recently president of McDonald’s USA, with immediate effect.

In a statement, Mr Kempczinski thanked Mr Easterbrook for his contributions, adding: “Steve brought me into McDonald’s and he was a patient and helpful mentor.”

Last year Intel boss Brian Krzanich stepped down for having a consensual relationship with an Intel employee, which was against company rules.

He had been in the post since May 2013.

Recalled US Ambassador Felt ‘Threatened’ By Trump

A recalled US ambassador at the centre of the Trump impeachment inquiry said she felt threatened by a cryptic remark the president made about her on a call.

Ex-envoy to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch told Congress she was “very concerned” by President Donald Trump’s comment in the phone call with Ukraine’s leader.

Mr Trump told his counterpart: “Well, she’s [Ms Yovanovitch] going to go through some things.”

Democrats have just released the first transcripts from closed-door testimony.

The Republican president is accused of trying to pressure Ukraine into investigating unsubstantiated corruption claims against his US political rival, Joe Biden, and his son, Hunter Biden, who worked with a Ukrainian gas company.

Ms Yovanovitch said she had been “shocked” by what the president said about her in the 25 July phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

That call triggered the current congressional impeachment investigation that could seek to remove Mr Trump from office for alleged abuses of power.

“I didn’t know what it meant,” Ms Yovanovitch said about the US president’s words. “I was very concerned. I still am.”

The House Intelligence Committee released Ms Yovanovitch’s testimony from 11 October on Monday.

On the Trump-Zelensky call, details of which were previously released by the White House, the US president also described Ms Yovanovitch as “bad news”.

In her testimony, the career diplomat said that when she sought advice from the US Ambassador to the European Union, Gordon Sondland, a Trump donor, he suggested Ms Yovanovitch tweet praise of the president.

“You need to go big or go home,” Mr Sondland allegedly told her. Ms Yovanovitch testified that she did not think she could follow the advice.

Ms Yovanovitch added that Mr Trump’s personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani had begun efforts to discredit her in late 2018 as he effectively ran a shadow foreign policy on Ukraine.

Mr Giuliani wanted to investigate Mr Biden and his son in order to find information “that could be possibly damaging to a Presidential run”, the diplomat testified.

Mr Giuliani also enlisted Ukraine’s chief prosecutor, Yuriy Lutsenko, to spread “falsehoods” about her in order to “hurt” her “in the US”, according to Ms Yovanovitch.

She said she had been warned by Ukraine’s justice minister that “I really needed to watch my back”. Ms Yovanovitch left Ukraine in May, months ahead of her scheduled departure.

During her testimony she recalled how Mr Giuliani had sought to secure a US tourist visa for another former Ukrainian chief prosecutor, Viktor Shokin – who had been refused such a visa by the state department on the basis of “known corrupt activities”.

Mr Shokin is the official whom Joe Biden, as well as representatives of other Western governments, attempted to have fired for alleged corruption. Republicans baselessly argue that Mr Biden called for his firing because of Mr Shokin’s decision to investigate Burisma, a Ukrainian energy firm for which Mr Biden Jr worked.

It’s unclear why Mr Giuliani pressed for Mr Shokin’s visa to be granted.

On Monday the House Intelligence Committee also released the transcript from last month’s testimony by a former top adviser to US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Michael McKinley told the inquiry that he had recommended a statement of support for Ms Yovanovitch, but was had been told Mr Pompeo had decided “better not to… at this time”.

Mr McKinley resigned from his post days before his congressional testimony last month.

He told the lawmakers that he had stepped down over his concerns about “the engagement of our missions to procure negative political information for domestic purposes”.

“The timing of my resignation was the result of two overriding concerns: the failure, in my view, of the state department to offer support to foreign service employees caught up in the impeachment inquiry; and, second, by what appears to be the utilisation of our ambassadors overseas to advance domestic political objectives,” he added, according to the transcript.

Also on Monday, four US officials who were called to testify to Congress failed to show up as requested.

Mr Trump, meanwhile, continued to call for the US government whistleblower who exposed the Trump-Zelensky call to waive anonymity.

Ex-Facebook head says company ‘profits partly by amplifying lies’

Facebook’s former head of Global Elections Integrity Ops left after six months on the job — and now she’s speaking out about the problems she faced when trying to fix the company’s political ad problems.

In an op-ed in the on Monday, Yaël Eisenstat, who joined Facebook after working with the CIA and the White House, says she tried to sound the alarm at the company leading up to the 2016 election. Recently, Facebook said it would let politicians lie in ads in the name of “free expression.”

“I didn’t think I was going to change the company,” wrote Eisenstat. “But I wanted to help Facebook think through the very challenging questions of what role it plays in politics, in the United States and around the world, and the best way to ensure that it is not harming democracy.”

Eisenstat explained that while employed at Facebook, she saw firsthand how ad tools and features were misunderstood by users and how the company pushed back on any suggested moves to fix the problem.

She said that she believes that when the company approves political advertisers, and provides them with a checkmark and a “paid for” label, it adds credibility to the posts. In reality, Facebook and its partners don’t fact-check any of this content.

“The real problem is that Facebook profits partly by amplifying lies and selling dangerous targeting tools…”

“The real problem is that Facebook profits partly by amplifying lies and selling dangerous targeting tools that allow political operatives to engage in a new level of information warfare. Its business model exploits our data to let advertisers custom-target people, show us each a different version of the truth and manipulate us with hyper-customized ads — ads that, as of two weeks ago, can contain blatantly false and debunked information if they’re run by a political campaign,” she continued. “As long as Facebook prioritizes profit over healthy discourse, they can’t avoid damaging democracies.”

According to Eisenstat, many of her Facebook colleagues agreed with her push to fix some of these political advertising issues. They still do, according to a signed by hundreds of Facebook employees.

Facebook’s leadership, however, did not agree.

“Ultimately, I was not empowered to do the job I was hired to do, and I left within six months,” she says.

In addition to sharing her own experience at the company, Eisenstat makes the case as to why Facebook’s ad transparency tools don’t cut it.

“True transparency would include information about the tools that differentiate advertising on Facebook from traditional print and television, and in fact make it more dangerous: Can I see if a political advertiser used the custom audience tool, and if so, if my email address was uploaded? Can I see what look-alike audience advertisers are seeking? Can I see a true, verified name of the advertiser in the disclaimer? Can I see if and how your algorithms amplified the ad?” she writes. “If not, the claim that Facebook is simply providing a level playing field for free expression is a myth.”

Eisenstat doesn’t believe in an outright ban on political advertising, as companies like Twitter have instituted. However, she believes the time for the government to step in and regulate the social media platform is well overdue.

San Pedro Not A Team Asante Kotoko Should Lose To

Asante Kotoko captain and goalkeeper Felix Annan has bemoaned their elimination from the Caf Confederation Cup on Sunday.

The Porcupine Warriors’ continental campaign crashed down away in Abidjan where they lost 2-0 to Ivorian side San Pedro in a play-off round second leg fixture.

Kotoko narrowly registered a 1-0 triumph in the first leg in Kumasi, a score which ultimately ensured San Pedro’s progress to the group stage through a 2-1 aggregate win.

“With due respect to San Pedro, but I don’t think this is a team that should stop us from qualifying to the group stage,” the shot-stopper said, as reported by his club’s official website.

“This is the most painful defeat I have ever had in my Kotoko career. I do not know how to explain it.

“Our attitude and mental toughness were not there because it is painful how we lost.

“We cannot be committing these sort of mistakes at this stage.”

Kotoko began the season in the Caf Champions League where a first-round loss to Etoile Sahel of Tunisia forced a demotion to the second-tier Confederation Cup championship

“I feel hurt for our fans who travelled from Ghana to Cote d’Ivoire to support us,” Annan added.

“I feel their pain and I think if I were in their shoes, I would have reacted and do more than they did. All I want to say is a big sorry to them because all we have is them and ourselves.”

Last season, the Porcupines reached the group stage of the Confederation Cup and their best performance in the competition remains a runners-up finish in 2004.

VAR Implemented Better In Champions League Than Premier League

The Premier League can learn from the implementation of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system in the Champions League and on-field referees must review incidents on pitchside monitors to remove all doubt, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard said on Monday.

VAR has stirred up a debate since its introduction in the Premier League this season, with a number of decisions either being wrongly overturned or not at all much to the annoyance of managers, players and supporters.

Unlike the Champions League, Premier League referees have so far refused to take a second look at decisions on pitchside monitors, preferring to let the officials at the VAR headquarters in London take the final call.

“The use of the screen on the side of the pitch can help because we’ve seen… in the Premier League decisions that firstly they’ve taken a long time to get to, which seems to bring in the fact there’s an element of doubt,” Lampard told reporters.

“So for the clarity of the referee on the pitch who has to see things live and make quick decisions, I think the idea he can go and look again has to be a good one… the reading at the beginning was that it was going to be used sparingly.

“And it hasn’t been used sparingly, It’s not been used at all. I do think that’s probably one thing we could look at.”

Chelsea are top of Group H at the halfway stage with two wins and they host second-placed Ajax Amsterdam on Tuesday knowing that another win would put one foot in the knockout stages.

“I have to accept it’s expected of Chelsea to go through and that is no disrespect to any other teams,” Lampard said. “I said at the start that this group would be tight because all the teams could take points off each other.

“But we must understand that even though we are at home now, the quality and the danger from Ajax is as much, if not more than the game we played away because they are such a good technical team.”

Lampard confirmed midfielder N’Golo Kante was back in the squad after returning from a groin injury but centre back Antonio Rudiger was set to see a specialist for a pelvic injury later on Monday.

‘You Small-Minded People’ – Balotelli Criticises Fans Over Racist Abuse

Brescia striker Mario Balotelli has criticised the “small-minded” fans who shouted racist abuse at him on Sunday.

Balotelli, 29, kicked the ball into the crowd and threatened to walk off the pitch following abuse during Brescia’s 2-1 away loss against Hellas Verona.

“This has nothing to do with football,” said the Italian, who played for Manchester City and Liverpool.

“You are getting into social and historical situations that are bigger than you, you small-minded people.”

Balotelli posted a message on Instagram in response to Luca Castellini, the head of the Verona ultras, who had said “Balotelli is Italian because he has Italian citizenship, but he can never be completely Italian.”

Castellini added they had recently signed a black player “and the whole of Verona applauded him”.

Balotelli, who has played 36 times for Italy and helped them reach the final of the 2012 European Championships, added: “Wake up you imbeciles, you are shambolic.

“When Mario scored a goal for Italy, and – I guarantee you – I will do so again, you are fine with that, aren’t you?”

Former Tottenham and Portsmouth midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng, who also faced racist abuse when playing in Italy, says “nothing has changed” in football’s fight against racism.

Boateng, who now plays for Fiorentina, refused to continue playing a friendly for his AC Milan side against Pro Patria in January 2013 in protest at racist abuse from the terraces, with the match then abandoned.

“Six years later nothing has changed but we don’t give up,” he tweeted. “Let’s keep fighting all together against racism. #Notoracism.”

Klopp fires back at Guardiola ahead of Premier League clash

Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp, has hit back at Pep Guardiola, after the Manchester City manager accused Sadio Mane of diving.

City face title rivals Liverpool this weekend and Guardiola has already started the mind-games ahead of the fixture.

Speaking over the weekend, Guardiola said: “It’s happened a lot for Liverpool in the last years [scoring late on].

“It’s because [Mane] is a special talent. Sometimes he’s diving, sometimes he has this talent to score incredible goals in the last minute. He’s a talent.”

Klopp has leapt to the defence of Mane, however, and insists the in-form Liverpool attack is “not a diver”.

Asked about Guardiola’s comments on Monday afternoon, the Reds boss told a press conference: “I am not in a Man City mood at the moment. I am not 100 per cent sure he only talks about Sadio.

“I don’t know how he could have known about the incident so soon after the game. But I can say, Sadio is not a diver.

“There was contact at Aston Villa, no penalty but there was contact. It’s not like he jumped over someone’s leg. All the other situations were penalties.

“If they happened for City they would want a penalty.”

Gov’t Won’t Open Ho Airport Without Planes – Volta Regional Minister

The Volta Regional Minister, Dr Achibald Letsa, says government will not open the Ho airport until it completes negotiations with private airlines to start flying to the region.

The US$25 million facility which was completed over a year ago is yet to be commissioned leading the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) accusing government of abandoning the project.

Dr. Letsa said on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday that the facility would be opened after successful deliberations with the private airlines.

“The President will not commission an airport when there are no flights. Until we are able to negotiate and convince private airlines to start flights to Ho, the President doesn’t see the wisdom in commissioning an airport without flights. That is what we are doing with the Minister of Aviation. If by the grace of God, we have a national airline soon, then it can be decided that it does daily air flight to Ho. We are convincing them to fly to Ho. It is not about the NPP having an airline and ordering it to fly to Ho. A private airline must be consulted and convinced to fly to Ho and that is what we are doing.”

Many continue to cast doubt on the functionality of the Ho airport, a year after the government announced that the facility was ready for use given its completion by contractors.

But the government has indicated that it is already in talks with private airline operators to make the facility operational.

A team of foreign airline experts is said to have visited the site to identify the possibility of building a flight training institution and other adjoining training platforms to make the airport a fully-functional one.

Dr. Letsa has been optimistic that the coming on board of these entities and the discussions that have been held with local authorities show a clear commitment that the facility will no sooner than later serve the purpose for which it was constructed.

Ho Airport justified

Former Managing Director of the Ghana Airport Company Limited, Charles Asare had earlier justified the decision of the Mahama administration to construct an airport at Ho in the Volta Region.

He said one of the major reasons for the construction of the facility was to transform the Volta Regional capital into an airport city to attract investors and generate income for the overall development of the town.

He said questions about why the facility has not been put to use as scheduled should be directed to the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Aussie Ash Barty wins WTA Finals

World number one Ashleigh Barty spectacularly ended her jinx against defending champion Elina Svitolina to win the WTA Finals on Sunday and scoop the richest prize in tennis history.

Barty, who had never beaten Svitolina in five previous attempts, won 6-4, 6-3 in one hour and 26 minutes at the Shenzhen Bay Sports Centre.

The Australian claimed a record-setting US$4.42 million paycheque — the largest sum ever awarded in men’s and women’s tennis.

Barty’s only loss was to late replacement Kiki Bertens and she became the fifth debutant to win the lucrative round-robin tournament.

“It’s been the most incredible year for me,” Barty said after the match. “I took my opportunities when I got them tonight.

“Pretty happy to play that kind of level in such a big match.”

Svitolina has not won a trophy since claiming the WTA Finals in Singapore last year, which remains the biggest title of her career. She had lost just one set before the final to be on track to claim a maximum prize of $4.725 million before falling short in the decider.

The Ukrainian had taken a liking to the slow indoor hard court, which has been criticised by other players, with her methodical counterpunching overwhelming opponents — but she was thwarted by an irresistible Barty.

The 25-year-old said she would use the off-season to recover from a nagging right knee injury, which forced her to withdraw from the Guangzhou Open in September.

“It’s the priority for me to be healthy for next season,” she said. “The pain is still there. It’s on and off. I have to manage it.”

Both players, who served strongly in Shenzhen, comfortably held service until Barty faced trouble in the ninth game, but she saved a break point and dug deep when it mattered most to fend off Svitolina’s relentless defensive prowess.

An increasingly confident Barty then attacked Svitolina’s serve in the 10th game and claimed the set with a sizzling forehand winner.

The Ukrainian hit back early in the second set and was gifted a break in the third game through a Barty double fault but could not consolidate on serve.

Svitolina’s title defence appeared in tatters when she double faulted to lose serve in the sixth game but courageously broke back.

The see-saw continued when Barty captured another break in a gruelling eighth game before serving it out to cap off a momentous season, which also includes a French Open crown and the year-end number one ranking.

Barty’s season is set to continue when she spearheads Australia’s Fed Cup title hopes against France in the final on November 9-10.

It was the first WTA Finals played in Shenzhen after a five-year run in Singapore and the competition will be based in the southern Chinese city until 2028.

The event’s move to China was highlighted by an eye-watering total prize pool of $14 million.

Chris Oyakhilome Foundation Offers Free Education to 400 Children In Yola [Video]

Chris Oyakhilome Foundation Offers Free Education to 400 Children In Yola Nigeria

Daji Sani in Yola

The Chris Oyakhilome Foundation International (COFI) has offered free basic education to 400 vulnerable children from conflict-ridden communities in Adamawa State.

The foundation also built a multi-million Naira school and health care facilities to offer free education and healthcare delivery to vulnerable children and communities affected by conflicts in the state.

The Chairperson of the Association of Widows, Adamawa Chapter, Mrs. Hilda Makonto disclosed this at an interactive session with journalists in Yola, the Adamawa capital saturday.

Makonto noted that the location where the school and health centre was built in Demsa Local Government Area (LGA) “is the area mostly affected by farmers-herdsmen conflict, which destroyed more than 10,000 lives and properties worth millions of Naira.
Makonto said she witnessed the inauguration of the facilities penultimate Thursday, adding that the facilities would be beneficial to children of indigent parents who were either affected by Boko Haram insurgency or farmers-herdsmen conflict.
“Many of us lost our husbands to insurgency and farmers-herdsmen conflict and some children lost both parents living with no one to care for them. But we thank God for sending the Chris Oyakhilome Foundation to care for them.”

“This gesture is divinely oriented because God had heard their lingering cries for help such as this for indigent children to go to a world class schools like this one so as to bridge gap between children of the poor and rich in the country,” she said.
She said the widows “are concerned because their children are major benefactors. We thank Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, Found of COFI for giving children of indigent and vulnerable groups the opportunity to have good education and free medical care at no cost.

In a telephone conversation with THISDAY, Head of Education Programme, Innercity Mission School, Vanessa Nosegbe said the school had already enrolled 120 pupils for the 2019/20 academic session.

Nosegbe added that all 120 children enrolled for its free schooling program in line with the mandate of the foundation are children who are from poor homes and vulnerable groups.

She said: “ We have our process of identification of the children we are looking at, if you look at the community they are impoverished. All the pupils here are indigent children.

“Through the leadership of their communities, we were able to sort out the most vulnerable because of the space we have which can take only 400 children. The education of these children is at no cost to their parents and while in school

they are feed at least a meal a day.”

Commending COFI’s intervention, the Deputy Speaker, Adamawa State House of Assembly, Mr. Pwamwakeno Mackondo said the establishment of the school and health care center “is a blessing to the state.”

He said the facilities were of world class standard while promising to seek the intervention of the state government “to construct good road for easy access to the facility, especially for the convenience of the sick who will require free medical care at the health care facility.”

But we don’t see it as a big deal. There’s nothing wrong to take inspiration from other people’s songs and make some few changes to suit your style and your audience.

Kobby Rockz’s song “Soa kodi” is a great piece same as Medikal’s “Kayayo” and we should just enjoy the two songs. Yes, same beat, same rhythm but it’s definitely not word by word or same storyline. Check it out and be the judge

Djokovic sweeps past Shapovalov to claim fifth Paris Masters

Novak Djokovic eased to a record-extending fifth Paris Masters title by brushing aside Canadian youngster Denis Shapovalov in Sunday’s final, boosting his hopes of taking the year-end world number one spot.

The top seed claimed a dominant 6-3, 6-4 victory over his 20-year-old opponent, who looked nervous after being the beneficiary of Rafael Nadal’s withdrawal before their scheduled semi-final.

Djokovic will lose top spot in the rankings to Nadal next week, but could still equal Pete Sampras’ record by finishing a sixth year as the world’s best player.

The 33-year-old Nadal is a fitness doubt for the ATP Tour Finals, which start in London on November 10, due to an abdominal muscle strain, while Djokovic has won the season-ending championships five times.

Djokovic, who lost to Russian Karen Khachanov in last year’s Bercy final, saved the only break point he faced as he sealed his fourth win from as many matches against the world number 28 Shapovalov.

The 16-time Grand Slam champion has now won 34 Masters titles, moving to within one of Nadal at the top of the all-time list, and 77 on the ATP Tour in total.

It was Djokovic’s fifth trophy of the season after previous triumphs at Wimbledon and the Australian Open, as well as at the Madrid Open and in Tokyo.

His success adds to his previous Paris Masters titles from 2009 and 2013-2015.

Djokovic makes statement
Djokovic, playing in his 50th Masters final, wasted no time in making a statement, serving an ace on the first point en route to a hold to love.

Nerves were clearly affecting Shapovalov, as he gifted Djokovic an early 2-0 lead with a series of unforced errors.

Shapovalov found his rhythm on serve to get on the board, but the first-set momentum had already been seized by his illustrious opponent, who eased 5-2 in front.

The comfortable opening set for the world number one was wrapped up at the first time of asking with a forehand volley after just 28 minutes on court.

Shapovalov, who claimed his maiden ATP title last month in Stockholm, kicked off the second set with a double fault, before a mishit forehand handed Djokovic a break point.

But the left-handed Canadian recovered with aces on both break point and game point to hold his serve.

The form that he showed in his brilliant quarter-final win over Gael Monfils on Friday was nowhere to be seen, though, and the 32-year-old Djokovic moved to the brink of victory with a break in game seven to lead the second set 4-3.

Shapovalov, who will move into the world’s top 15 next week, gave himself a glimmer of hope by moving to 30-40 on Djokovic’s serve, but the Serbian closed the door, although he was then forced to serve for the title.

He accomplished that on his first match point after only 65 minutes of play with a whipped forehand winner before raising his arms in celebration.
