Show HN: Play Battletech CCG From webapp About page: Welcome! Battletech CCG is a fantastic card game. Wizards of the Coast discontinued it in 2001. This service exists to help people play a game using their physical deck remotely. To get started, create a new game and send your friend the gameId. They can join. Then click "Initialize" and "Call" buttons to start a video chat with them. When you play a card from your deck, hold it up to your camera and the service will capture it and match the image to a pristine image capture of the card that you can place on your virtual table so your opponent can see it. With good lighting and steady hands, the image matching works 100%. But if it doesn't, just show your card to your opponent through your camera, and then look up the pristine copy by name. Use click, control-click, shift-click, or alt-click to tap, add counter, remove counter, or zoom in on a card. Click your die to roll it. Need some cards to build a deck? There are lots on ebay! Need some help buildling a deck? Try 20x resource cards, 20x mechs, 10x command cards, and 10x mission cards. Show HN: I made a cheap alternative to college-level math & physics tutoring https://bit.ly/3vi8RWI
Show HN: I made a cheap alternative to college-level math & physics tutoring Hi everyone! I’m the founder of Explanations (https://bit.ly/4av0O7B). I’m building a website where students can get college level math & physics help for 1/10th the cost of private tutoring. You’d type a question, and your teacher replies by drawing a Youtube/KhanAcademy-style video; and this happens asynchronously throughout the week. When I was studying at MIT, I often had to wait 40-60 minutes in line just to get 5 minutes of “help” from a TA - when I needed 1-2 hours. I understood that TAs can’t spend all their time helping me. That’s understandable. But what made me bitter was that, the school went the extra mile to ensure I don’t have the resources to learn on my own, 1. Blocking access to solutions for past problems (to prevent cheating) 2. Purposely not recording explanations to increase attendance: https://bit.ly/4aqru9A 3. Insisting that Office Hours is a 1-by-1 format even when crowded (to prevent solutions from leaking) These policies have good intentions - it’s to encourage a synchronous, in-person learning experience. But in practice, it had side-effects: 1. Help resources become inefficient - because so much material is restricted, and so much time is spent on delivering live lectures, there’d often be 40 students competing for help from 2 TAs in a 2-hour Office Hours 2. Because help resources are inefficient, it’s very hard to catch-up: once you fall behind, you have no way to review past material efficiently enough to compensate the difference - like credit card debt 3.Every day, I’d wake up, go to a lecture I don’t understand, go to Office Hours so I can hopefully ask for a review (which’d would take a few hours), realize TAs aren’t willing to do that, then realize there is nothing I can do to recover. I fell into a depression for many years, and my bitterness fueled me to work on the early versions of explanations.app It turns out that universities succeed by being prestigious, not by teaching well. To win at prestige, be highly selective (by keeping supply low), keep a huge endowment (because it affects school rankings), and hire the best researchers (not teachers). This is actually the fundamental reason for the odd incentives in higher education, and something felt wrong. So explanations.app is completely inspired by KhanAcademy and Youtube. The mystery to me was - why weren’t there more Youtube teachers & KhanAcademy videos? I believe it’s a combination of: 1. People who teach college subjects well often have better opportunities e.g. work, research 2. Lack of rewards: even Youtubers with 100K views and 10K subscribers would have at most 1-5 paying members on Patreon On the one hand, there are all these free resources, where teachers changed the world way more than they ever got rewarded for. Then on the other hand, there is private tutoring - very effective - but very expensive e.g. $100/hour for college level subjects. I believe the balanced solution is a system where lots of students pay $10/week to a few teachers who make videos, like a paid, Q&A Youtube/KhanAcademy, so it’s personalized, effective, but still affordable. There are currently 2 teachers on explanations.app - Ben & Esther - both MIT grads, teaching physics & math for subjects like linear algebra and electromagnetism. 3 students - Laquazia, Lidija and Chandra from US, Serbia and Korea joined this month following r/physicsStudents launch: [https://bit.ly/3IW984G] While explanations.app is focused on college-level math and physics, the platform is completely open for anyone to learn and/or teach. I hope you can try it :^) and give me the chance to work with you. March 27, 2024 at 09:10AM

Show HN: Onelook – Create applications by describing them in human language Hey HN! We are the team at Onelook. Demo: https://bit.ly/3Px4QUT Blog post: https://bit.ly/3vsGogM... Onelook allows users to create fully-functional applications by describing them in human language. And by fully-functional we really mean backend included. Think of it as Retool for non-technical people or Copilot to build apps. Existing tools are for technical teams and even Retool, which is a great product, requires setting up connection to databases, write queries, and call REST APIs. We understand it is impossible to create a fully-functional app just by describing it in one go. Our approach is to model the conversation between a client and a product manager. In this case, the AI is the PM. The user chats back and forth with the AI to refine the app. Thank you! https://bit.ly/3PDDbSu March 26, 2024 at 05:02AM

Show HN: Elder Dragon's Tavern, my D&D character tracker https://bit.ly/3TuQtSq
Show HN: Elder Dragon's Tavern, my D&D character tracker This has been my secret pleasure for the past four years. Ever since I started playing D&D during the pandemic, I discovered my love for role playing and storytelling, but Beyond just wasn't cutting it for me. I wanted to make my own personal character creator and tracker that I could use for my games, so I set out to build Dwarven Academy ( https://bit.ly/3TyfQmc ) and after two years of learning I decided to rebuild it all from the ground up, so The Elder Dragon's Tavern was born. Try it out at https://bit.ly/4a1j88C This is an app to build and track D&D characters automatically, online, everywhere. It is integrated into Roll20 via a Chrome extension I wrote. I made it with the aim of automating all the book-keeping required in the game; and with the intent of being able to create lots of homebrew and tweak every single little thing about my characters. I like it because it's so flexible, down to the tiniest effect detail. Well, I like it because I built it, so I am certainly biased. I used it to create all characters I played over the past years, and to play all the campaigns I joined in that time, with the Roll20 extension. It is built on top of a very simple firebase firestore database, which after years of use I've come to not enjoy particularly. Its limitations are sometimes fiddly and hidden away in obscure pieces of documentation. Sometimes it has network issues and doesn't properly push changes. I guess I chose it at the start because it was the easiest way to switch from prototyping (saving to local storage) to a cloud solution. All the stack is firebase to be honest and the rest is OK. There is no backend: it's a complete frontend-based application. Even migration code is in the frontend. I just couldn't be bothered to set up an actual backend as I wanted to write things quickly for my own enjoyment. There are security rules on the firestore interface, of course. Also, I dread social networks and marketing. I find it really draining and I don't want to invest all my time in advertising so after a first test with Dwarven Academy, I really didn't bother. As I said, I built this application mostly for myself but YOU can use it as well. It's free and available. I've also been considering adding AI to it but honestly I asked myself... would I really benefit from it? Not sure. For now it seems too much work and cost for very little added value. https://bit.ly/4a1j88C March 24, 2024 at 09:54AM

Show HN: Using LLMs to Research Reddit to Help Decide What to Buy Shopping online can be pretty tedious if you care about the quality of what you are buying. The time it takes can scale pretty proportionally to some combination of the value, relative importance, and complexity of the purchase. I think LLMs can help expedite and personalize the online shopping experience to a degree marketplaces just don't currently provide. I don't think anybody really wants to read the product descriptions of a bunch of products, read reviews, do pairwise product comparisons, and find the best deals across different websites? Or am I wrong? That's why I think this shopping assistant idea is pretty cool. Would appreciate any feedback on it. ty https://bit.ly/4ajilAh March 22, 2024 at 08:32AM

Show HN: Website for creating self-signed certificates If you're developing locally and need to use HTTPS for whatever, then this tool is hopefully useful to you. I made it because there's a lot of bad info online about generating self-signed certificates. For instance, a lot of guides don't use the SAN list extension or show you how to create a proper certificate chain. Firefox doesn't allow a CA certificate to be used as an end certificate. Getting a working certificate can get pretty confusing, especially for newcomers to certificates or webdev. Having a website for this also means the process of getting a certificate is the same, no matter if you're on a Unix-like OS or Windows. A WebAssembly module built with C++ and Mbed TLS is used to create the keys and certificates. TypeScript and Preact is used for the UI. https://bit.ly/3x0I01O March 17, 2024 at 08:24PM
Show HN: Interactive Smartlog VSCode Extension – An Interactive Git GUI https://bit.ly/3TdwNSI
Show HN: Interactive Smartlog VSCode Extension – An Interactive Git GUI Interactive Smartlog is a graphical VSCode extension that presents a simplified view of the Git log, directly highlighting the branches and commits that are most relevant to your current work. And it's not just a visual tool — it's fully interactive, allowing you to add/switch/remove branches, stage/unstage files, and manage commits directly from the GUI. This tool draws inspiration from Meta's Interactive Smartlog built for the Sapling source control system, and I've adapted it to work with Git. Transitioning the functionality from Sapling to Git wasn't just about a one-to-one feature transfer; it involved changing how data is queried & presented, as well as introducing UI interactions for several Git concepts (like branches, staging/unstaging changes, etc) which are not present in the Sapling source control system. Originally a personal project to enhance my own workflow, I've published the extension on the VSCode marketplace for anyone who would like to use it. I'm keen to hear your feedback and suggestions, as community input is invaluable in shaping its future updates. https://bit.ly/3Tk5l5W March 17, 2024 at 01:58AM

Show HN: SatCat5, the open-source FPGA Ethernet switch We've just launched v2.5 of SatCat5, the open-source FPGA Ethernet switch [1]. SatCat5 contains various FPGA building blocks that let you build a custom mixed-media Ethernet switch. It was originally intended for cubesats [2] but has many other potential applications. The headline feature for this release is support for the IEEE-1588 Precision Time Protocol (PTP). SatCat5 has demonstrated end-to-end synchronization to within 50 ps-rms, which is approaching the world-leading performance of CERN's White Rabbit Project [3]. Except we're doing time-transfer over regular, non-synchronous Ethernet. The key breakthrough is a new technology for digital timestamps that we've published in IEEE Access [4]. This project was featured on HN back in 2023 [5]. Since then, we've changed to the CERN-OHL-W v2.0 license, which has much better legal clarity for FPGA projects. Show HN: deptry 0.14.0 – detect unused Python dependencies up to 10 times faster deptry 0.14.0 was just released, bringing significant speed improvements: It is now up to 10 times faster than the previous release! For those unfamiliar with deptry; deptry is a command line tool to check for issues with dependencies in a Python project, such as unused or missing dependencies. [[GitHub]( https://bit.ly/49ZFlnx )] For some benchmarks of the new release, see the release notes [here]( https://bit.ly/3TD5UsN ). The performance improvement was achieved by leveraging Rust to parse the AST and extract the import statements from .py files, rather than using Python's ast module. The addition of Rust to the project also opens up doors for more optimizations in the future, so stay tuned! https://bit.ly/3TD5UsN March 16, 2024 at 09:04AM

Show HN: Manta – A tool for FPGA Debugging and Rapid Prototyping Hi HN! I'm Fischer, and I'm super stoked to share a project that I've been working on for a little over a year: Manta, an open-source, cross-platform, vendor-independent tool for debugging and rapid prototyping with FPGAs. This was originally my Master's Thesis at MIT, where I developed it for our course on FPGA design. We needed an alternative to vendor debugging tools, which only supported x86 machines running Windows or Linux. We were able to patch in macOS support with VMs, but as more students came bringing ARM-based devices, we needed a new tool. So I developed this. It's called Manta, and I've just released v1.0.0. It's written in Python using Amaranth HDL, which allows it to run on nearly any machine, and export vendor-agnostic Verilog-2001. It lets you read and write to arbitrary registers and memory on the FPGA, and provides an integrated logic analyzer. It's modular, so you can use any number of these functionalities in any combination, as long as you've got a UART or Ethernet connection to the FPGA. Next up on the docket is adding support for more advanced interfaces like Wishbone, AXI, AHB, and Avalon. And maybe even adding a Web UI for debugging with a logic analyzer in the browser. Or peeking and poking at individual registers. Or issuing arbitrary AHB3 transactions. I'd be super curious to hear your thoughts on the tool! And if you want to kick the tires, be my guest :) https://bit.ly/48KbKwU March 8, 2024 at 01:49AM

They cannot be the guardians of journalism. We're former journalists who care about reporting, and made a news feed for news. It's like social media, in that you can follow who and what you want, but unlike social, all posts come from real, verified journalists. No conspiracy theories, spam, or hate speech. Just news. Show HN: DevBuddies – where programming buddies work together Hi there, I’m a developer and I have always struggled with design aspects and have always been in need for a designer. There used to be a website called programmermeetdesigner.com, but that shut down a long time ago. I have never found a place like that anymore, so after 15 year of having the desire for a place like that I have decided to make it myself. Hence DevBuddies. DevBuddies is a place focussed on developers looking for other people to help them with development and design, and I also added marketing, entrepreneurship and coaching/mentoring. Of course nowadays there are a lot of other ways and places to meet other developers, designers, etc, but not like I wanted it. DevBuddies is not that special or complex (this is the best sales talk you are ever going to see..), but I just wanted it like that. However. I have no wish for growing a community or pushing this into the world, which is probably necessary for DevBuddies to be ‘successful’. I just wanted to fulfill a long-standing wish to create DevBuddies. That’s also the reason that for initial content I have decided to add Reddit content through scraping. This is actually not a bad thing since that content is now better searchable by DevBuddies users and adds value for them. Anyhow, if you have any ambitions for something to help me out on growing DevBuddies or take it over let me know. For now, enjoy DevBuddies! https://bit.ly/3SYQDkG March 5, 2024 at 08:09PM

Show HN: Google Sheets add-on to fuzzy lookup, highlight and remove duplicates https://bit.ly/3Ilgn5J
Show HN: Google Sheets add-on to fuzzy lookup, highlight and remove duplicates 5 years ago, I created an add-on for Google Sheets called Flookup Data Wrangler for lightweight data cleaning inside the Google Sheets environment. It features both a menu function and a spreadsheet function component. Flookup can be used to: 1. Lookup and match data regardless of text-based differences. 2. Highlight and delete duplicates even if the dataset has mismatched text. 3. Calculate the percentage similarity between text entries. 4. Extract unique values from any column based on percentage similarity. 5. Remove stop words based on text similarity and strip punctuations from strings as well. Because of its versatility, Flookup can be used to return the best match, the next best match, etc. until the minimum percentage similarity is reached. This feature avoids weaknesses other fuzzy matching algorithms have because it safely hands power to you, the user, and I believe the user is the best judge of which data is a match or not. One other great feature Flookup has is that it can be used to combine lookup values. This is particularly helpful when your dataset has many similar strings, and you want to include extra information to your lookup value in order to increase the specificity of your query. It's basically a promise-based dependency graph runner plus a simple text templating engine, and it works quite well for the smallish projects I've tried it out on so far. If you find Make crufty, CMake inconsistent, Ninja verbose, and Bazel just too much build system, give Hancho a try. Don't like one of Hancho's defaults? Show HN: Using GPT-4 to buy outfits I liked from movies and TV shows In a nutshell: 1. Sometimes, I like the vibes of the outfit and I want to see similar items I can buy from my favourite stores. So I made this Chrome extension that lets you shop any outfit via picture. It uses GPT-4 to generate natural language descriptions of the items in the outfit, then searches the web for them. It also lets you set your preferred shops, sizes and budgets as filters, so you can see only stuff you would actually consider buying. It's definitely inspired by in-world music that sometimes appears in games. I basically took that concept, keeping the music aspect, and dropping the entire "game" aspect. I also turned it into a more "traditional" non-interactive album, but since I started with code, why not program the whole thing? Show HN: Payme, a library and CLI to generate QR codes for SEPA payments I built this library and tool several years ago. Some event where I was a co-organizer needed pre-payment for the orders, and to make this easy without going the path of an online payment service, I sent automatic mails with payment QR codes included. The CLI also (by default) generates QR codes in the terminal, which I use often when an invoice needs to be paid: copy all necessary fields as CLI flags, generate the QR in the terminal, scan with the phone, double check everything and go! Maybe paying should not be this easy... https://bit.ly/4bRICGZ March 1, 2024 at 06:31PM
