Kidnapped ASUP chair, scribe, 3 others regain freedom

Four staff of the Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology, Igbo Ora and one other person who were kidnapped on Thursday have regained their freedom, DAILY POST reports.

Our correspondent recalls that the four staff of the institution who were kidnapped included the Chairman of the Academic Staff of Polytechnics (ASUP), Mr. Opadijo Oluyide, Secretary of the union, Mr. Gbenga Alayande, two other staff of the institution and a wife of one of the victims.

DAILY POST reported on Saturday that Olujide, Alayande and two other staff of the institution, along with wife of one of the victims, were kidnapped while coming from a meeting which was held in Saki on Thursday.

The kidnapped victims have now been freed by their abductors.

They were released Saturday, though it was not clear whether ransom was paid to secure their release.

Public Relations Officer of the institution, Mrs. Opeyemi Olawoore confirmed that the victims were released Saturday evening.

Olawoore in a statement made available to DAILY POST Saturday evening said, “The five persons abducted by kidnappers in Igboora, out of which four were lecturers of Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology, Igboora have finally regained their freedom.

“The lecturers and other victim were released Saturday evening.

“I am happy to announce that the five abductees have been released unhurt.

“Comrade Olujide Opadijo thanked everyone for their prayers and support. In his words, “we thank God that we were released unhurt.”

“The Management of the Polytechnic, thanked the Oyo State Government, Hon. Commissioner for Education, Traditional rulers in Ibarapa Land, Staff, Students, OYSCATECH Christian and Muslim community, Union leaders, executives of Joint Action Committee of Tertiary Institutions in Oyo State, the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, the Media, Families, Friends and stakeholders for their concern, prayers and support while the abductees were in the custody of their captors.”

Arsenal manager, Unai Emery, has said the club-record signing, Nicolas Pepe, needs to complete his adaptation to the Premier League “quickly”.

The 24-year-old, who moved to the Emirates from Lille in a £72million deal, has made three starts in his six Gunners appearances so far, but only has one assist to show for his performances.

Emery has called for him to step up during Sunday’s home game against Aston Villa.

“He needs more adaptation. He is playing good but progressively we know there is going to be more performance in him to help us and I want to do now quickly the last step in the adaptation for us, for example, against Aston Villa.

‘We are working with him first for that adaptation.

“After the training now we are watching individual videos with him, also to push him to achieve the details tactically we need for him because he is playing well but also we need in our organisation to be strong with every player to improve a lot,” Emery said in his pre-match press conference.

Pepe starred for Lille in Ligue 1 last season, with his 22 goals and 11 assists, putting him behind only Kylian Mbappe in the league’s golden boot.

Arsenal manager, Unai Emery, has said his team will stick to passing out from the back.

However, ahead of today’s Premier League game against Aston Villa, Emery said the players will still go long, if situation calls for it.

Arsenal’s tactic of building from the back came under fire last weekend, after they were held by Watford after letting a two-goal lead slip.

The Gunners bounced back from that disappointing 2-2 draw at Vicarage Road, with a 3-0 win away to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League on Thursday, when their style of play was far less risky.

But Emery has told Mail Online, that the philosophy of playing out from defence, will be part of Arsenal’s “identity”.

“The last match, Watford, was maybe the worst in our build up. But we are going to try, to work, to improve, to achieve our style.

“To build up with the goalkeeper and centre back is going to be our identity but we are going to share sometimes with long balls.

“Against Frankfurt we were different and decided more times to do long ball, earn metres on the pitch and after attack the space. We are going to decide what to do on Sunday, depending on Aston Villa,” he said.

Asked whether his players have the freedom to make their own decisions on whether to build from the back or go long, Emery said: “We use different ways.

Crucially, it was the former Wa All Stars owner who breathed life into the football careers of many of the favourites for the elections, especially four seen to be the main candidates: George Afriyie, Wilfred Osei Kwaku (aka Palmer), Kurt Okraku and Fred Pappoe.

A look at the last decade of each of these candidates’ careers shows they could not have achieved anything meaningful in the local game without the blessing of Nyantakyi in one form or other. Such is his influence, and it says a lot that none of the major contenders for the GFA throne have ever said a bad word about the former Fifa Council member, despite the public fall he suffered due to the June 2018 Anas sting.

So, who does Nyantakyi support?
Initial inquiries within the football community suggest that Nyantakyi favours Wilfred Osei Kwaku, aka Palmer.

Osei Kwaku is running a campaign under the acronym ‘P4P’ (Palmer for President), which hits full gear following the confirmation of nomination procedures at close of business on Friday.

Starting this weekend, Nyantakyi is expected to quietly lobby key stakeholders to make the Tema Youth owner his heir.

Indeed, Joy Sports understands that the camps of Palmer and Kurt Okraku have been seriously courting Nyantakyi for his endorsement within football circles, recognizing the power he still wields.

George Afriyie, the other heavyweight contender, suffered a breakdown in relations with Nyantakyi about 20 months ago, which led to Afriyie being removed as Vice President of the FA. It has therefore been difficult to lobby Nyantakyi for support.

Joy Sports understands that were it not for this strain in their rapport, Afriyie would have been the standout man for the former GFA boss. As it is, among the front-liners for next month’s elections, Palmer remains the only man standing to have openly supported Nyantakyi to the very end of his tenure, regularly putting his credibility on the line to defend the administration’s policies.

It is understood that Nyantakyi sees his quiet endorsement of Palmer’s campaign as a reward for this loyalty. In fact, until the former FA boss and Afriyie had their misunderstanding, Afriyie was his most trusted lieutenant, which is why he was made FA Vice President in 2016.

However, there remain a lot of delegates who will vote in the elections who want to make a clean break from the Nyantakyi era. Flood Submerges Over 150 Communities in Kogi State

Kogi Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Sanusi Yahaya, announced that over 150 communities have been submerged following flooding in nine Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the State.

 

Yahaya made the disclosure while addressing newsmen after a stakeholders meeting at the state emergency operation centre on Saturday, September 21st in Lokoja. The commissioner noted that the centre had been activated as the state was already experiencing flood emergency.

 

Yahaya who is also the State Coordinator, Emergency Operation Centre (EOC), said that out of the nine local government areas located along the banks of River Niger and Benue, seven LGAs were severely affected while other two were not so severe. He said the LGAs severely affected are: Ibaji, Kogi Koton Karfe, Lokoja, Ofu, Ajaokuta, Omala and Idah, saying over 90 per cent of Ibaji communities have been submerged.

”Particularly, majority of communities at Ibaji are under water, and many households have been affected and displaced. As we speak, the water level has risen very high to about 10.60m on Saturday in Lokoja from the report of the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA). In the last few days, many communities, settlements have been displaced as a result of flooding,” he said.

He said that over 20 camps had been opened by the government to accommodate flood victims, which were spread across the nine affected LGAs. Yahaya advised residents of flood-prone areas and affected communities to relocate to safer places or move to the nearest camps opened by the state and local governments, to avoid loss of lives and properties.

 

He added that with the activation of the state emergency centre, the state was collaborating with all the relevant stakeholders to ensure timely and appropriate responses.

“The state needs help; while we are working within the resources available to us, we need temporary shelter provision, food, non-food items and water, which the affected victims would need.

In terms of efforts to document the displaced persons; the profiling is ongoing and we will keep updating the number of the affected households and persons. Our officers are in the field profiling, and we have to put it together before we can give out figure, and this figure will keep changing day by day,” he said.

The commissioner said the number of households as at Saturday at Gadumo axis was 215, Ganaja 176, Galili axis 272, and Adankolo axis 246, under Lokoja and Ajaokuta LGAs.  He, however, noted that no human casualty has been recorded in terms of death, but stressed that the victims were facing precarious situation.  The commissioner urged the Federal Government through NEMA to come to the aid of the state.

 

He named some of the submerged communities as Adankolo, Gadumo, Egan, Budon, Kinani, Esikaku, Oreza, Edimose, Enumayi, Ogbangede, Iganumo, Bagana, Obakume, and Idirisu. Others are Edeha, Adabode, Edegaki, Akpaku, Okpaka, Adamogu, Kasemiya, Kpakpazi, Kelebe, Ozahi, Panda, Ikumo, Irenodu, Iganumo, Geregu, among several others.

Date For 2019/20 Ghana Football Season Announced

The Normalization Committee for the Ghana Football Association has set November 3 as the date for the start of the 2019/20 domestic season.

In a calendar sent to Premier and Division One League clubs on Friday, the Normalization Committee set October 14 for the registration of players and officials to commence while the transfer window is to shut December 30.

Submission and inspection of venues by clubs and the Licensing Board will take place between October 15 and 30.

During that periods the list of Referees and Match Commissioners for the 2019/20 season would be determined and followed by a CMS Workshop for the officials.

The 2019/20 Ghana Football season will run for 34 weeks and is expected to end Sunday, June 14, 2020.

Tanker Filled With Diesel Falls On Otedola Bridge, Spills Content Across The Road [Photos/Video]

A tanker ladenned with diesel, has fallen across Otedola bridge in Lagos, spilling its content on the road. Traffic is currently on stand still on the road as most commuters are in panic mode over fears there might be a fire outbreak.

 

Law enforcement agents as well as men of the Lagos state Emergency Management AUthority are on ground to forestall any fire outbreak as well as protect the lives and properties on that road.

 

Recall that a similar incident happened on the same bridge in June 2018 which led to the death of over 10 persons. Several cars were burnt.
