Ronaldo may have gotten a hint he won’t win the award and avoided going to the ceremony. He won the UEFA Nations League trophy with Portugal and Italian League title with Juventus where won the Italian league most valuable player award.
His post on the social media platform came just immediately after the award show ended, and he could be seen visibly relaxed at home, with his son reading a book at the dining table.
Megan Rapinoe won the women’s player award – ahead of fellow American Alex Morgan and England’s Lucy Bronze – at the Best Fifa Football Awards in Milan.
Rapinoe, 34, claimed the Golden Ball for being the best player at the 2019 Women’s World Cup as she helped the United States win the competition.
Lyon right-back Bronze, 27, was named in the women’s team of the year – the only English player to feature.
Rapinoe’s international boss, Jill Ellis, took the women’s coach award.
The 53-year-old, who also guided the United States to the World Cup trophy in 2015, announced in July that she will be stepping down as the national coach in October.
The other managers to be nominated were the Netherlands’ Sarina Wiegman, whose side lost 2-0 in the final to the United States, and England’s Phil Neville, who guided the Lionesses to fourth place.
‘An incredible year for women’s football’
Rapinoe scored six times during the Women’s World Cup, including the opener in the final, and has also been a leading personality in the fight for equality in sport.
Before the final, she accused Fifa, football’s governing body, of not showing women’s football enough respect as the game was played on the same date as the men’s Copa America and Gold Cup finals.
Rapinoe has also called for the United States women’s team to be paid the same as their male counterparts.
The US co-captain, who is gay, also encouraged her victorious United States team not to meet President Donald Trump as she said his administration “doesn’t feel the same way and fight for the same things we fight for”.
In a powerful speech when collecting her award from Fifa president Gianni Infantino, Rapinoe highlighted the racism, homophobia and inequalities that she said still exist in football.
She said: “Some of the stories that inspired me this year are [Manchester City forward] Raheem Sterling and [Napoli defender] Kalidou Koulibaly – their incredible performances on the field and their reaction to the disgusting racism they have to face, this year but probably for their whole lives.
“I feel like if we really want to have meaningful change, what I think is most inspiring would be if everybody other than Sterling and Koulibaly were as outraged about racism as they were.
“If everybody was as outraged about homophobia as the LGBTQ players, if everybody was as outraged about equal pay or the lack thereof, or the lack of investment in the women’s game, other than just women, that would be the most inspiring thing to me.
“We have such an incredible opportunity being professional footballers, so much success, an incredible platform.
“I ask everyone here, lend your platform to other people, share your success. We have a unique opportunity to use this game to actually change the world for better. I hope you take that to heart, do something, we have incredible power in this room.”
Before handing the award to Rapinoe, Infantino himself said more would be done to stop racism in football. He said: “This is not acceptable. We have to say this. We have to say no to racism.
“In whatever form, no to racism in football, no to racism in society. But we can’t just say it, we must fight it, kick it out of football and society once and for all.”
Rapinoe, who plays for Reign FC in the National Women’s Soccer League, added: “Jill Ellis and the rest have put us in a great position. This was an incredible year for women’s football. For those who just noticed you are a bit late to the party. It truly was incredible to be part of the World Cup – the enthusiasm we had was amazing.”
Fifa Fifpro Women’s Team of the Year
Netherlands’ Sari van Veenendaal, who plays for Atletico Madrid after moving from Arsenal in July, won the best women’s goalkeeper award, ahead of Chile’s Christiane Endler and Sweden’s Hedvig Lindahl.
Van Veenendaal was the only player from last season’s Women’s Premier League to be included in the Fifa Fifpro Women’s Team of the Year, while European champions Lyon were represented by three players – Bronze, Wendie Renard and Amandine Henry.
Americans Kelley O’Hara, Julie Ertz and Rose Lavelle joined Rapinoe and Morgan in the 11, while Brazilian Marta, who scored the 17th World Cup goal of her career in the summer – a record in men’s or women’s football – was also selected.

The African Action Congress, AAC, has urged its followers to storm the Federal High Court, Abuja, in support of its 2019 presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore.
Sowore had called for a revolution over the alleged failure of the current Federal Government.
Following the call for revolution, the Department of State Services, DSS, had arrested the AAC 2019 presidential candidate.
Despite Sowore’s arrest, the protest was held in pockets of locations.
Sowore, who is the Publisher of Saharareporters, will appear in court on Tuesday to face a seven-count charge levelled against him by the Nigerian government.
However, AAC National Organising Secretary, Comrade Oshioks explained that the call for members and supporters to storm the court would send a strong message to the government for infringing on Sowore’s right.
In a statement he signed and sent to all AAC members, Oshioks said, “We are all expected to be at the Federal High Court, Maitama, Abuja, on days our national leader, Sowore, will be brought for his court hearing.
“The solidarity from us will send the right message to those who have trampled on his fundamental human rights for the past 52 days and counting.
“It will let the Nigerian Government know that the people know Sowore as a man different from the allegations cooked up against him.
“Comrades, we are all encouraged to kindly attend these proceedings in solidarity. We should be in court as early as 8:00am daily.”

South Africans have been warned to withdraw enough money ahead of the nationwide strike in the banking sector on Friday as ATMs and banking services will be shut down.
The country’s biggest financial union Sasbo said it would bring the industry to a standstill when it protests retrenchments.
Earlier this year, Standard Bank closed 91 branches, affecting hundreds of jobs.
Absa also announced jobs would be at risk because of its restructuring processes.
Over 40,000 finance sector employees are expected to take part in the strike.
Sasbo’s Joe Kokela said there won’t be money in many ATMs across the country on Friday.
“ATMs are mended and programmed by our members so if our members are not at work then there will be no service produced.”
Kokela also had other advice for South Africans.
“If you’re travelling make sure you have enough petrol because the speed points machines may not be working.”
He says this is all to teach the banking sector a lesson.
The South African Revenue Service says the strike may affect tax payments and refund transactions.

Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk has insisted he cannot be compared to Lionel Messi, dismissing any suggestions he was disappointed not to win the Best FIFA Men’s Player award.
Van Dijk finished second to Barcelona superstar Messi for the prize on Monday, with Juventusand Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo coming third.
The Dutch defender’s nomination came after a Champions League-winning campaign, as Van Dijk helped guide the Reds past Tottenham in the finale.
The centre-back said there was no way he could be compared to Messi, who scored 51 goals in all competitions in 2018-19.
“The people who vote made a decision and you have to accept it,” Van Dijk told reporters.
“That’s just the case and as players you can’t compare me and Messi because it’s totally different.
“I’m very proud to be here.”
In addition to helping his side win the Champions League last season, Van Dijk’s Liverpool fell just short to Manchester Citydespite an incredible Premier League campaign.
The Netherlands international also guided his country to the inaugural Nations League final, where they fell to Ronaldo’s Portugal.
Van Dijk, named in the FIFA World X despite missing out on the big award, said there was no disappointment when it came to Messi’s victory.
“Disappointed? You can’t be disappointed,” he said.
“I’m just very happy to be here, to be in the team of the year, after the hard work and the good work we put in last year.
“Today, I, unfortunately, didn’t win but I’m not disappointed.”

Teresa and Peter have shared a love for all things Disney ever since they met. But they didn’t want their families to have to travel across the country from New York for their wedding, so they did the next best thing and brought Disney to them. The Bear Mountain Carousel at Bear Mountain State Park was the perfect location for their Haunted Mansion-inspired reception. Peter wore shoes based on the Disneyland attraction, and the movie’s soundtrack played throughout their wedding day. The bride wore a stunning custom-made dress that complemented the dramatic and dark florals. Their fun wedding cake was adorned with skull pumpkins with mouse ears, while the toppers were their own skeleton renditions!
One of the many highlights from the couple’s Halloween wedding was definitely the merry-go-round that guests were able to ride all night.
Facebook wants to know what you’re going to do before you do it, and the company is well on its way toward making that (admittedly creepy) dream a reality.
Andrew Bosworth, Facebook’s vice president of VR and AR, announced Monday the acquisition of “neural interface platform” CTRL-labs. The stated goal of the acquisition is to build a wristband that “captures your intention” by reading electrical signals sent through your body.
It’s all in the ostensible name of “empowering you with control over your digital life,” and, coming from a company that has repeatedly misled users regarding matters of privacy and personal data, sounds a tad bit sketchy.
Today we’re thrilled to share that Facebook has agreed to acquire CTRL-labs. Our team is excited to join @boztank and his group Facebook Reality Labs to empower people with non-invasive neural interfaces at scale. http://bit.ly/2l1rcmK
However, let’s allow the good Bosworth an opportunity to explain the vision himself.
“You have neurons in your spinal cord that send electrical signals to your hand muscles telling them to move in specific ways such as to click a mouse or press a button,” he wrote in a Facebook post. “The wristband will decode those signals and translate them into a digital signal your device can understand, empowering you with control over your digital life.”
Because control over your digital life definitely equals letting Facebook decode and interpret your body’s electrical signals.
But wait, there’s more. Bosworth continued that the benefit of this technological breakthrough will be … easier photo sharing?
“It captures your intention so you can share a photo with a friend using an imperceptible movement or just by, well, intending to,” he explained.
The Menlo Park based company, of course, has talked a big mind-reading game before. Facebook first announced its plans to peer into the fleshy grey matter depths of your skull way back in 2017. And just this past July, Facebook gave a public update on its plans to “decode silent speech” with some sort of brain interface.
Facebook clearly felt it needed to bring in additional hired guns to make its bizarre privacy-obliterating dream a reality. Here’s hoping that CTRL-labs adds a little self-awareness to the mix.
