Girl Hides in Bush to Take Photos During Sister’s Engagement

There are no lengths Therese Merkel wouldn’t go to for her older sister Rachel, and that includes disguising herself as a bush to snap some super sweet engagement photos. Yep, a week before Rachel’s then-boyfriend Andrew Philibeck planned to propose, Therese and her brother Ryan walked the trail to Picnic Point in Madison, WI (aka the proposal spot) to devise the perfect plan for their sister’s engagement. “I was like ‘Haha, what if I was a bush?” and Andrew is the one who really ran with it,” Therese told POPSUGAR via email. “I got this text [from him] later that night . . . It was then real.”

A month before the engagement, Andrew called Therese to ask for her approval before he proposed, and to ask for some help in crafting an engagment plan Rachel would never forget. Almost immediately, Therese, the family videographer, knew she was going to have to figure out a way to video tape her sister’s reaction during the big moment . . . in secret, of course.

Andrew called ahead to get special permission to decorate Pincic Point with sunflowers — Rachel’s favorite flowers — and glowing lanterns. Then, at sundown on Sept. 21, Therese got into position, blending in almost seamlessly with the trees and shrubbery around her. “While I was hiding, I had the perfect view of the whole thing,” she said. “Andrew knew I was hiding and wasn’t even sure I was there when he walked down — that’s how baller this suit was. He wrote her a loving poem, and then got down on one knee — well, at least tried, because the ring got stuck in his pocket during attempt one . . . She said yes during attempt two.”

“Rachel was very confused and I was legit crying tears of joy because of how special the whole event was.”

During the proposal, Ryan and a few others were posted further down the trail to make sure the coast was clear for the sweet moment and Therese’s hilarious reveal. “I revealed my organic-looking self by screaming ‘SHE SAID YES! SHE SAID YES!'” Therese explained. “Rachel was very confused and I was legit crying tears of joy because of how special the whole event was. I wore the suit the full mile hike back . . . and yes, I did have Rachel give me a tick check when we got back to my place.”

Afterwards, both Andrew and Rachel’s immediate families got together for a suprise party, in which Therese was (probably) not disguised as a bush. “The bush was one of the 4,932 things Andrew did to make the day super awesome and family-oriented,” Therese added, pointing out the surprise party, the creative engagment, and Rachel’s gorgeous engagement ring as just a few elements that made the day so special.

In addition to all of Andrew’s thoughtful planning, Therese’s dedication to capturing Rachel’s immediate reaction proves just how far a sister-sister duo will go for each other. So sweet! See more photos of Therese’s fantastic costume and the shrub-tastic engagment ahead.

Ghana Star Thomas Partey Rated High In Goalless Madrid Derby

Ghana star, Thomas Partey has been rated high in the goalless Madrid on Saturday evening.

Atletico Madrid hosted Real Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in the matchday seven.

Partey was named by Atletico Madrid coach, Diego Simeone, in the starting lineup and in return, he gave a good show for the team but unfortunately, they could not find the back of the net despite creating some good chances.

The results leave Diego Simeone’s side on the league log with 14 points at the 3rd position.

Atlético Madrid
Jan Oblak – 7 – A towering presence. Highlight an unreal diving stop from Karim Benzema late on.

Kieran Trippier – 7 – Atlético’s main attacking outlet. Constantly available down the right. Used the ball smartly, and even defended Eden Hazard well.

Stefan Savic – 7 – A solid display.

José Giménez – 7 – Colossal as always. Really relished (and dominated) the physical battles with the Madrid forwards.

Renan Lodi – 5 – Bright early on, but struggled to cope with the intensity of the game. Subbed on the hour.

Thomas Partey – 8 – Exceptional display. Solid defensively and constantly drove Atleti forward with his passing and movement. No one on the pitch was anywhere near his level, nor could they get there (and they sure tried). Looked like (ironically, given the opposition) Fernando Redondo reborn. A supreme display.

Koke – 4 – Didn’t stamp authority on the game. A floating nothing of a display.

Saúl – 5 – Pedestrian. Moved to left-back for the last 30 minutes where he showed a bit more gumption.

Vitolo – 5 – Ran hard but rarely with a focused end product. Wasted attacks on both flanks. Hooked at half-time.

Joao Felix – 5 – Should have scored early on when sent through by Costa. A few bright moments but faded majorly after half-time. Subbed with 20 minutes remaining.

Diego Costa – 5 – Missed a stunning chance on the half-hour. Battled well but clearly lost a step, physically.

Substitutes:
Angel Correa (for Vitolo ’46) – 6 – Instantly moved it quicker and with more purpose.

Thomas Lemar (for Lodi ’60) – 5 – Added more purpose and drive but had absolutely nothing in the final third.

Marcos Llorente (for Joao Felix ’70) – 5 – Did little.

Real Madrid
Thibaut Courtois – 6 – Made some impressive interventions.

Dani Carvajal – 7 – Worked hard up and down the right all night long. A ferocious display.

Raphael Varane – 7 – Devoured any and all Atleti attacks.

Sergio Ramos – 6 – Lucky to avoid an early yellow. Otherwise solid even if he trod the disciplinary tightrope on occasion.

Nacho – 7 – Crucial block on the half-hour, got his body between Costa and the ball and prevented a goal. Repeatedly put his body on the line for Madrid and created a superb chance for Benzema late o. A warrior performance.

Casemiro – 6 – Tackled as always. Couldn’t get a handle on Thomas.

Fede Valverde – 7 – Added a tremendous amount of steel to the Madrid midfield. A constant source of energy and defensive cover when Los Blancos needed it. Unlucky to be taken off.

Toni Kroos – 6 – Sprayed passes and shots but was shut down and outplayed by Thomas.

Gareth Bale – 4 – Tried to make things happen but it wasn’t working. Wasted Madrid’s best chance with a horrendous shot.

Eden Hazard – 4 – Madrid’s big signing was kept quiet by Atleti. A few impressive runs couldn’t disguise that he was massively unfit and completely at odds with all his team-mates.

Karim Benzema – 5 – Isolated. Unlucky to not score with a late header. Subbed at the death.

Substitutes:
Luka Modric (for Valverde 68′) – 7 – Put in a great cross just seconds after coming on. Looked bright and full of ideas.

James Rodriguez (for Hazard 77′) – 6 – Looked sharp.

Luka Jovic (for Benzema 88′) – n/a – n/a

Thomas Partey Stars Atletico Madrid Hold Neighbors Real Madrid In Goalless Madrid Derby

Ghana midfielder, Thomas Partey was very influential Atletico Madrid, on Saturday in their goalless draw with Real Madrid.

Partey was named in Atletico Madrid starting line up by head coach Diego Simeone but could not propel the team to victory against the 13 times European champions at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.

The 26-year-old dictated the midfield and allowed the likes of Joao Felix and Kieran Trippier to the freedom to do their best in an attacking sense.

However, Partey got himself into the referee’s book in the 93rd minute.

Spanish football expert, Sid Lowe, described Partey as “the game’s most outstanding player”, in his match for the British paper, The Guardian.

The Black Stars midfielder was at the heart of most positive things for Atletico Madrid’s men.

He offered good passing in the team’s attacking third and he also contributed with some recoveries of the ball when the opponent had it.

Partey connected 21 out of 35 attempted passes in the zones around Real Madrid’s goal and he got the ball back 9 times from the opponent.

‘Learn From Raheem Sterling To Be The Best’

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has implored Callum Hudson-Odoi to copy Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling to reach the next level.

The English born Ghanaian winger made his first Blues appearance of the season in their devastating 7-1 Carabao Cup cup win over Grimsby Town and came off the bench in the Premier League victory against Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday.

The 18-year-old highly-rated winger was sidelined for over 140 days after sustaining a serious ankle injury, marked his return with a goal against Grimsby and followed it up with an assist at home to Brighton.

Since coming through Chelsea’s esteemed academy he’s been heavily linked with a move to Bayern Munich that dominated much of last season.

However, Hudson Odoi earlier this month committed his long-term future to the Stamford Bridge-based team, which delighted manager Lampard who has given many of the club’s youngsters ample playing time under his tenure.

Expected to have a great career, Lampard feels for Hudson-Odoi to become “the best” he could do no wrong in following the example of Manchester City winger Sterling, who in the last few seasons under Pep Guardiola has gone from having big potential to being considered among the game’s very best.

“I know Callum’s talent and he has got huge talent. Hence why the club were so keen to get him signed up and we’re all delighted with that as a club,” he told reporters.

“But there’s a lot of work for Callum to do. Lots of work. I think you can look around and look at fantastic examples and not even at this club.

“I don’t like to talk about other club’s players but Raheem Sterling is an incredible example of a player with great talent whose work ethic added to that talent and [showed] improvement in a short period of time through absolute dedication [to become] a complete player that we are all wowed by. [Sterling] is exactly the great model for Callum, because he has those talents.

“I want him to be the best, the absolute best, because he has the potential to do that and a lot of that or some of that is some hard truths and I saw some hard truths in the game the other day and ways that he can improve and he needs to listen to them and he will. And then he can be that player for us, which is great news for everybody.”

Manchester City Hold Off Resilient Everton

Manchester City had to work hard to see off a spirited Everton side and stay five points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Riyad Mahrez and Raheem Sterling both struck in the final 20 minutes to give City victory after they had wasted some good chances, but they needed two excellent saves by Ederson to hold off the Toffees.

It was a convincing end to a tense evening, with Pep Guardiola’s side going to a murky Merseyside knowing only victory would suffice after seeing the Reds maintain their flawless start earlier on Saturday.

The defending champions started well and, after Ilkay Gundogan somehow hit the bar from point-blank range, they took a deserved lead thanks to another moment of genius from Kevin De Bruyne.

His trademark whipped cross from the right was nodded home by Gabriel Jesus, giving the Belgian his eighth assist of a stellar campaign.

That spelled trouble for Everton, whose boss Marco Silva was under pressure before kick-off after back-to-back league defeats, but they responded well and were soon level.

Toffees substitute Alex Iwobi fought his way into the box and the ball dropped for Seamus Coleman, who beat Ederson with a dinked shot before Dominic Calvert-Lewin made sure of the equaliser with a diving header on the line.

City were playing some neat football but with top scorer Sergio Aguero starting on the bench along with David Silva and Bernardo Silva, they could not make it count in the final third.

Sterling should have restored their lead at the start of the second half when he ran clear from a delightful Mahrez pass, but his first-time finish fizzed wide.

Everton were asking questions too, particularly from set-pieces, before Mahrez provided the spark City had been waiting for when he curled home a stunning free-kick into the bottom corner from 20 yards out.

The home side refused to lie down and Ederson made vital stops from Calvert-Lewin then Yerry Mina, but Sterling made sure of the points when he forced the ball home after Aguero’s cross-shot was saved.

RS Bekane 2-0 Ashgold – Moroccan Club Knocks Out Miners

Obuasi Ashanti Gold has been knocked out of the 2019/2020 CAF Confederations Cup after losing 2-0 to RS Bekane in a second leg fixture at the Stade Municipal de Berkane on Saturday night.

The Ghana Premier League side had high hopes going into the match after beating their Moroccan counterpart 3-2 a fortnight ago when they hosted them at the Len Clay Sports Stadium.

Though the West African club held a slight advantage going into the return leg, they could not make it count and sadly fell to the might of the North Africans in front of a packed stadium.

An early red card issued to Muhamed Musah on the 8th minute came as a big blow to the away side.

They managed to hold on for a while but conceded on the 32nd minute courtesy a strike from Dayo Issoufou from close range.

Zaid Krouch cemented the victory for RS Bekane on the 45th minute courtesy a well-curled shot into the back of the Miners net.

All efforts by Ashgold manager Ricardo Da Rocha and his lads to get back into the match failed to materialize, leaving them to succumb to a 4-3 aggregate loss at the end of the two-legged tie.

The Ghanaian side has now been eliminated from the continental competition and will have to try against next time when they earn their ticket.

Ashgold Fail To Progress To Group Phase After RS Berkane Defeat

Last season runner ups, RS Berkane of Morocco have reached the playoff round of the 2019-20 Total CAF Confederation Cup when they defeated AshantiGold who played almost full time with ten men 2-0 at Berkane Municipal Stadium on Saturday night, to overturn their away 3-2 defeat in Obuasi a fortnight ago.

RS Berkane qualified winning 4-3 on aggregate.
Knowing they have to win at home, Berkane started the game on attacking note.

The hosts were boosted when the Ghana Premier League side were reduced to ten men just six minutes into the game with AshantiGold defender Musah Mohammed shown a straight red card.

Berkane had to wait till the half-hour mark to open the scoring via Burkina Faso import Issoufou Dayo who scored brilliant scissors kick to put the home side ahead.

Midfielder Zaid Krouch doubled Berkane’s tally just before the break to give his side a 2-0 lead on the night.

After the break AshantiGold tried to reduce the deficit, but they needed a draw at least with Berkane relieved to see their visitors at bay.

The Moroccans will wait to know their opponent from CAF Champions League first-round losers, with a place in the group stage at stake.

Real Madrid Stay Top After Madrid Derby Draw

Real Madrid stayed top of La Liga after maintaining their unbeaten domestic start with a goalless draw at city rivals Atletico Madrid.

In a first half of few clear-cut chances, Diego Costa was inches away from sliding home Thomas Partey’s low cross.

Gareth Bale should have given Real the lead in the second but blazed Nacho’s cross over the bar.

Jan Oblak produced a marvellous save to deny Karim Benzema late on.

Diego Simeone’s side thrashed Real Madrid 7-3 in New Jersey in pre-season, but the match at the Wanda Metropolitano was a much more cautious affair with only two shots on target in the first 45 minutes.

Both those efforts came from Toni Kroos, who twice forced Oblak into action with low drives from outside the box.

Atletico failed to properly test Thibaut Courtois throughout the 90 minutes, although it was not for the lack of trying.

Costa almost slid in Partey’s delivery, before Joao Felix – who marked his first competitive Madrid derby appearance with a lively performance – dragged a fierce shot off target from the edge of the area five minutes before the break.

Real enjoyed the better of the openings in the second half, Bale scooping Nacho’s low delivery high over the crossbar from an excellent position.

Benzema thought he had snatched all three points for Zinedine Zidane’s side with 15 minutes remaining but Oblak, diving at full stretch, kept out the Frenchman’s goal-bound header with a strong left hand.

The draw lifts Real one point above Granada – who beat Leganes 1-0 earlier on Saturday – while Atletico climb above Barcelona into third.

Sanchez Goes From Hero To Villain As Inter Continue Winning Run At Sampdoria

Alexis Sanchez scored and was sent off in his first start for Inter Milan as the Serie A leaders maintained their perfect record with a 3-1 win away to Sampdoria on Saturday.

Stefano Sensi’s deflected strike put Inter in front after 20 minutes before on-loan Manchester United forward Sanchez finished from close range to double their lead two minutes later.

The match turned on its head a minute into the second half when Sanchez was shown a second yellow card for simulation and Jakub Jankto pulled back a goal for Sampdoria with 35 minutes still to play.

But Roberto Gagliardini pounced to seal the three points for Inter, who have won their first six league games of a season for the first time since 1966/67 and only the second time in their history.

The victory restored Inter’s two-point lead over Juventus at the top of the table ahead of a meeting between the two sides at San Siro next Sunday, while Sampdoria are rooted to the bottom of the table after taking just three points from the opening six rounds.

Swiss to auction 25 super cars seized from E. Guinea leader’s son

A collection of luxury cars seized from Equatorial Guinea’s vice president Teodorin Obiang Nguema will be auctioned off in Switzerland on Sunday and are estimated to bring in 18.5 million Swiss francs ($18.7 million).

“This is an exceptional sale,” Philip Kantor, of British auctioneers Bonhams, told AFP. “It’s a private collection of supercars, with very low mileage.

Among the cars, to go under the hammer at a Geneva golf club, are seven Ferraris, three Lamborghinis, five Bentleys, a Maserati and a McLaren.

The most expensive lots are a Lamborghini Veneno Roadster, valued at between 4.8 million and 5.7 million euros ($5.2-6.2 million) and yellow Ferrari hybrid at 2.4-2.6 million euros.

The cars were all confiscated by Swiss justice after the opening in 2016 of a financial wrongdoing case against Obiang, son and likely heir of Equatorial Guinea’s authoritarian President Teodoro Obiang Nguema who has ruled for 40 years.

All will be sold with no reserve price.

In February Swiss prosecutors said they were dropping charges of financial wrongdoing against Teodorin Obiang Nguema but were confiscating the luxury cars as part of the case.

Under the Swiss penal code, prosecutors can choose to drop charges in this category if defendants offer compensation “and restore a situation that is in conformity with the law.”

Playboy reputation

Equatorial Guinea has also agreed to give Geneva 1.3 million Swiss francs to cover the costs of the case.

Vice president with responsibility for defence and security, Teodorin Obiang has a reputation for a playboy lifestyle.

In October 2017, a Paris court handed him a three-year suspended jail term after convicting Obiang of siphoning off public money to buy assets in France.

He was accused of spending more than 1,000 times his official annual salary on a six-storey mansion in a posh part of the French capital, a fleet of fast cars and artworks, among other assets.

He was also given a suspended fine of 30 million euros.

In September, Brazilian media said that more than $16 million in cash and luxury watches were seized by Brazilian police and customs officers from luggage of a delegation accompanying Obiang on a private visit.

Brazilian daily O Estado de Sao Paulo quoted a diplomatic source from Equatorial Guinea as saying the money was to pay for medical treatment Obiang was to undergo in Sao Paulo.

The watches were for the “personal use” of the president’s son and were engraved with his initials, the report said.

Obiang is reputedly on a fast track to succeed his father.

Last October, he was promoted from colonel directly to division general, without passing through the normal intermediary rank of brigade general.

The following month, he presided over a cabinet meeting for the first time.

The tiny West African nation is one of the continent’s top petroleum producers and has a population of just 1.2 million.

The country is regularly cited by NGOs as one of the most corrupt in the world.

NPP Primaries: Journalist Survives 'Mad Beatings' In Sagnarigu Constituency

A reporter of Tamale based Diamond FM has survived some real beatings in the hands of some supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The angry political hoodlums claim he allegedly took pictures of a constituency executive who collapsed at the ongoing NPP primaries at the Sagnarigu Constituency.

Ms Sangkpi Sabina is said to have been slapped multiple times and dragged on the ground by the aggrieved supporters.

She was subsequently forced out of the venue by the supporters.

The Sagnarigu Constituency chairman collapsed when he was walking out of the venue with some supporters of the party. It is not known what might have caused his collapse.

Christian Coleman Wins 100m Gold in 9.76 Seconds

Christian Coleman shrugged off the controversy of his build-up to the World Championships to win the 100m final in 9.76 seconds.

The pre-event favourite, who avoided a ban for three missed doping tests, finished well clear of defending champion and fellow American Justin Gatlin, who clocked 9.89 in Doha.

Canada’s Andre de Grasse took bronze in 9.90.

Britain’s European champion Zharnel Hughes was sixth in 10.03.

Although Coleman will receive generous plaudits for his display here, USA track great Michael Johnson said prior to the competition that controversy surrounding Coleman “completely disqualifies” him from being the face of the sport.

The US Anti-Doping Agency charged Coleman with missing three drugs tests in 12 months before withdrawing the claim.

“I am humble, I am just here to win titles,” an elated Coleman said afterwards.

“It is an incredible time. I think the sky’s the limit, I think I still have a lot of things I can work on and improve, I think I can keep dropping my time.”

For the second successive day the crowd was sparse inside the Khalifa Stadium, which can hold 40,000. There has been no update as to whether the organisers have improved on sales of 50,000 tickets for the entire 10 days.

On Saturday, the stadium became more vacant as the evening wore on and only a few witnessed the spectacular light display before the men’s 100m final.

Much of the focus leading up to the championships was about whether Coleman or his USA team-mate Noah Lyles – competing in the 200m – would take the title of ‘sprint king’ following Usain Bolt’s retirement after London 2017.

That projected battle was thrown into serious doubt when it was announced in August that Coleman was under investigation for missing three tests in 12 months. If found guilty, the 23-year-old from Atlanta faced a one-year ban.

However, the US Anti-Doping Agency, which initially charged Coleman, withdrew the case after it was proved there had been a filing irregularity regarding the date of the first missed test.

Seemingly unaffected by the drama, Coleman cruised through the rounds before once again making his superiority count in the final.

Defending champion Gatlin, who is also a controversial figure having twice served doping bans, produced another excellent display in a final.

Having won the Olympic title back in 2004 and now aged 37, he still remains a force in men’s sprinting and must be regarded as an Olympic medal contender for Tokyo 2020.

Hughes might feel disappointed with his display. The Anguilla-born sprinter, fifth at the 2015 championships, looked comfortable in his heat and semi-final but failed to recreate that level of performance when it mattered most.

“My body wasn’t feeling up for it tonight unfortunately,” said Hughes, who will go on to compete in the 200m.

“When I pushed out I was all over the place and I lost my form and I’m not happy with that, but I live to fight another day.”

Great Britain’s Adam Gemili and Ojie Edoburun failed to progress beyond the semi-finals.

Gemili, who will also run the 200m, was just edged out into third in his semi while Edoburun came fifth.

Earlier in the day Dina Asher-Smith, one of Britain’s main medal hopes, eased into Sunday’s 100m semi-finals but it was the performance of Jamaica’s Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce that drew gasps from the crowd inside the Khalifa Stadium.

The 32-year-old, 10 years after completing her first Olympic and world double, looked relaxed as she powered past her rivals to cross the line in a time of 10.80 seconds – the fastest ever at this stage of the event at a World Championships.

As for Asher-Smith, she also dipped under 11 seconds – for the seventh time this year – and won her heat comfortably. The only other sprinter that managed a sub-11 seconds run was Ivory Coast’s Marie-Josee Ta Lou, who won her race in 10.85.

Britons Daryll Neita and Imani Lansiquot also progressed, as did Rio 2016 gold medallist Elaine Thompson and the USA’s defending champion Tori Bowie.

‘We will see what happens’ – Giles

The British trio of Elliott Giles, Kyle Langford and Jamie Webb all qualified for Sunday’s 800m semi-finals.

Giles, 25 – the 2016 European bronze medallist – led almost from start to finish to clock the fourth fastest time of the heats – one minute 45.53 seconds.

He told BBC Sport: “It was more mindset. KISS – keep it simple. I knew what I needed to do. I don’t need to over-complicate it, just run. Richard Kilty said, ‘over analysis leads to performance paralysis’. That has stuck with me. All we have to do is run and we will see what happens.”

European indoor silver medallist Jamie Webb finished third in his race while Kyle Langford, a surprise fourth two years ago, went through as a fastest loser.

Britons Shelayna Oskan-Clarke and Alexandra Bell both failed to qualify for Monday’s 800m final. Oskan-Clarke, the world indoor bronze medallist, was in a good position in the final 60 metres but tripped as she approached the line.

Brilliant Hassan takes 10,000m title

There were three other medals won inside the stadium. Jamaica’s Tajay Gayle surprised his more illustrious rivals by winning the long jump with 8.69m.

Olympic champion Jeff Henderson clinched silver with 8.39m and Cuba’s world indoor champion Juan Miguel Echevarria took bronze with 8.34m.

Remarkable Dutch athlete Sifan Hassan who has previously won world medals in the 1500m and 5,000m added 10,000m gold with a world lead time of 30 minutes 17.62 seconds. And the USA’s DeAnna Price won the hammer title with a distance of 77.54m.

Elsewhere, Norway’s world champion Karsten Warholm and his main rival Rai Benjamin, of the USA, both eased into Monday’s 400m hurdles final.

Both the men’s and women’s 50km walk races take place later, a day after the competitors in the women’s marathon struggled with the heat and humidity at Doha’s Corniche.
