NUGS Beijing Launches Power Series Initiative

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) – Beijing Chapter launched the maiden edition of its monthly leadership development series dubbed “Power Series” over the weekend. The series which aims at equipping members with leadership skills for today’s highly competitive world had Ghana’s Ambassador to Ghana; Ambassador Edward Boateng as the maiden speaker.

He spoke on the theme “Living and taking advantage of the moment- Lessons from the Life of an Achiever”, and shared his personal experiences in being an executive of Coca Cola in the United States, leading CNN’s business drive in Africa and setting up his business in Ghana and Africa to change the negative narrative of Africa that was predominant in the 80’s and 90’s but still present today.

Commenting on failure, he said “failure is part of the success equation but depends on how you treat it. The most important thing is to keep moving when you fail and share your fears with trusted friends because you may not know who has the answer to your problems”.

The session provided participants the opportunity to ask pertinent questions in business and life in general for practical advice from the dignitaries that attended the event. The maiden edition was held as part of the union’s first General Assembly (GA) meeting for the 2019/2020 academic year and therefore had officials of the Embassy present.

On his part, the Deputy Ambassador; Dr. Charles Dwamena advised participants to direct their research and experiences in China to build sustainable solutions for Ghana. He also stressed the importance of networking and the need to develop quality and meaningful friendships in the course of their studies.

He indicated that Ghana’s One District-One Factory (1D1F) policy had opportunities for Ghanaians especially the youth to create businesses and contribute to the development of the nation and therefore strategic that participants identify investors that can collaborate and create sustainable businesses in Ghana.

As an orientation and onboarding experience for new students and as a reminder to old students, Mr. Sylvester Acherekoh, the Head of the Consular Section of Ghana’s Embassy in China advised students on the acceptable and non-acceptable conducts and behaviors in China.

He stressed on the need to be good ambassadors for Ghana and not contrary. He also informed participants of the embassy’s support services for all Ghanaians who visit or live in China. He ended by advising participants to take a keen interest in learning the Chinese language before leaving China since it will differentiate them and open doors in their life in China or upon return to Ghana.

In an interview with the media, Mr. Mwin-Nia Saan-ye Zumakpeh; a Ghanaian MSc student in Actuarial Science and Risk Management at he University of International Business and Economics in Beijing and Vice President of the union expressed his gratitude for the massive turnout and support from the Ambassador and his team at Ghana’s Embassy in China. He stressed the need for participants to implement the learnings so that it doesn’t end up being the usual “talk-with no action” associated with many of such great concepts.

He confirmed the commitment of the leadership of NUGS-Beijing in sustaining this series and said that due to technology, subsequent editions can be held on China’s popular WeChat platform for convenience rather than converging at a physical location.

He said “This is a great initiative that will be sustained either by holding subsequent sessions at a physical location or holding a live online chat on WeChat with an accomplished personality. Building on the Global Development Leadership Forum started by the former administration, we believe that we deserve more of such events to sharpen our skills and abilities”.

Other leaders present were; Mr. Alfred Nii Hammond; an Assistant to the Head of Consular Affairs and Timothy Kwakye Karikari; President of the Beijing Chapter of the National Union of Ghana Students – China. The event was moderated by Samuel Donyinah; a Ph.D. candidate at Beijing Normal University.

Juventus Sweep Past Bayer Leverkusen

Federico Bernardeschi (right) celebrates scoring Juventus’ second goal

Juventus took control of the Champions League Group D destiny by brushing aside Bayer Leverkusen in Turin.

On a night when Atletico Madrid won 2-0 away at Lokomotiv Moscow, Juve joined the Spanish side at the top of the table on four points.

Gonzalo Higuain pounced on Jonathan Tah’s mistake to fire in the first, with Federico Bernardeschi sweeping in the second.

Cristiano Ronaldo raced through to get the third late on.

For a long while, this was a low-key affair, especially in the period in the first half after Higuain’s 17th-minute opener.

Tah failed to deal with a ball from the right, heading it into the path of Higuain, with the Argentine taking one touch before producing a clinical finish.

Leverkusen, who lost captain Lars Bender to injury in the warm-up, had plenty of the ball, but lacked the guile to unlock the characteristically solid Juve defence.

And, when the hosts were able to counter, the German side suffered bouts of panic at the back, not helped by the eccentricities of goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky.

Still, Hradecky played his part to keep his side in it when Juventus went through the gears in the second half, invigorating the home crowd as they did so.

Twice the Leverkusen keeper denied Ronaldo, first with a low save to a shot from 12 yards out, then by smothering a close-range effort when the Portuguese was left alone in the box.

In between, though, Hradecky was powerless to prevent Bernardeschi netting the second.

After good link-up play between Higuain and Ronaldo, Ronaldo failed to connect with a cut-back from the byeline, only for Bernardeschi to arrive behind him and effectively end the contest.

Wales midfielder Aaron Ramsey arrived as a substitute just before Leverkusen’s last clear chance, when Paulinho’s lob went over onrushing Juve keeper Wojciech Szczesny, but also beyond the bar.

It looked as though Ronaldo would end the evening frustrated, only for the prolific frontman to find space between Leverkusen defenders, latching on to a through ball and finishing through the legs of Hradecky.

Seven-Goal Bayern Demolish Tottenham As Gnabry Scores Four

Former Arsenal youngster Serge Gnabry is the first player to score four goals in the second half of a Champions League game

Tottenham Hotspur’s troubles continued as they were humiliated in the most devastating fashion by Bayern Munich in the Champions League on one of the most embarrassing nights in their recent history as Serge Gnabry scored four goals.

The scale of this thrashing for manager Mauricio Pochettino and his players was made even more stark by the fact they took an early lead through Son Heung-min and were on level terms until just before half-time.

Bayern posed a huge threat throughout and were quickly on terms through Joshua Kimmich’s superb 20-yard finish – but Spurs failed to heed the warning signs and ended up reduced to a rabble as they sunk without a fight in the second half.

Strange as it may seem looking at the scoreline, this was an enthralling encounter that really turned on the stroke of half-time when, with matters in the balance, Robert Lewandowski produced a brilliant turn and right-foot finish past Hugo Lloris from 20 yards.

The manner in which Spurs subsided once they went behind will be of huge concern to Pochettino and all those who have detected underlying problems with the manager and his team since they lost the Champions League final to Liverpool in June.

Bayern gathered momentum and put themselves out of sight when former Arsenal youngster Gnabry scored twice in as many minutes shortly after the interval, taking full advantage of more poor defending to beat Lloris emphatically.

Harry Kane gave Spurs brief hope with a penalty after Kingsley Coman fouled Danny Rose but Bayern were in no mood to open the door, instead running riot as Gnabry added two more, with another smooth finish from Lewandowski sandwiched in between.

It is the first time in Tottenham’s 137-year history that they have ever conceded seven goals at home in any competition.

Spurs left the pitch to a chorus of jeers. They will cling to the fact they reached the final after losing their first two group games last season – but this is the sort of beating that will take a long time to recover from.

Spurs brutally exposed by Bayern

This was the biggest home defeat of an English team in any European competition

Tottenham’s display had so much to commend it for the first 35 minutes as they closely resembled the side that reached the Champions League final so dramatically last season, playing with passion, urgency and pace to trade blows with this dangerous Bayern.

Even when honours were even, however, danger lurked obviously as Spurs were being exposed on the flanks as the pace of Gnabry and the prowess of Lewandowski flagged up big trouble ahead.

And so it proved as, from the moment Lewandowski swept a magnificent low finish past Lloris with virtually the last kick of the first half, Spurs were stretched and picked apart, with the defensive pairing of Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen looking slow and laboured. The sight of the latter plodding in the wake of Gnabry when he hit the back of the net once more was a particularly ominous sight.

Spurs will also look at early chances squandered by Son but there is no escaping the brutal reality of what was done to them by Bayern.

This is regarded as a Bayern side in transition, remember they lost at home to Liverpool in the last 16 last season, but by the final whistle it was literally a question of how many they would score as Spurs waited for the whistle like a boxer waiting for the final bell.

Spurs can still get out of this group but serious damage will have been inflicted by this loss and its inglorious manner.

What now for Pochettino?

Mauricio Pochettino has yet to win a trophy in a 10-year managerial career

Spurs’ battling win against 10-man Southampton on Saturday looked to have lifted the siege mentality around manager Pochettino and answered the questions asked after an indifferent start to the season which saw a Carabao Cup exit to League Two Colchester United.

Instead, after this, the questions will not only return but will be more probing. This result will not only stun Pochettino, his players and Spurs supporters, it will come as a jolt to chairman Daniel Levy.

Spurs now see themselves as big players on this elite European stage but this scoreline paints them as the opposite. Levy will not appreciate that.

Pochettino must now rally himself and this bedraggled team, who looked lethargic and lacking the stomach for the fight once Bayern took control.

These are decisive days for Pochettino and Spurs.

Man of the match – Serge Gnabry (Bayern Munich)

Only one candidate for man of the match. Serge Gnabry has scored as many goals at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as Harry Kane

Match stats – 14 goals in 10 games for Lewandowski

  • Tottenham are the first English side to concede seven goals in a European game since they lost 8-0 to Cologne in the 1995 Intertoto Cup
  • This was Mauricio Pochettino’s joint heaviest defeat as a manager, alongside a 5-0 loss to Real Madrid in March 2012 with Espanyol
  • This was Bayern’s joint second biggest away victory in European competition, behind only a 7-1 win against Roma in October 2014
  • Spurs conceded seven goals in a competitive match for the first time since December 1996 – a 7-1 Premier League defeat by Newcastle United
  • Serge Gnabry is the only the second German player to score four goals in a Champions League match after Mario Gomez versus Basel in March 2012 (also for Bayern, 7-0 win).
  • Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski has scored in his last nine competitive appearances – his longest scoring streak in his German club career. He has scored 14 goals in 10 games for Bayern this season, more than any other player in the big five European leagues.
  • Spurs’ Harry Kane has scored more Champions League goals against German teams (five) than he has against sides from any other nation in the competition.

What’s next?

Tottenham visit struggling Brighton in Saturday’s Premier League lunchtime kick-off. Bundesliga leaders Bayern are at home to Hoffenheim the same day.

Serge Gnabry scored four as Bayern Munich demolished Tottenham 7-2 in their own stadium on Tuesday. Former Arsenal forward Serge Gnabry scored four times as Bayern Munich embarrassed Tottenham 7-2 in London, piling the pressure on under-fire Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino.

Spurs were comfortably the better side in the first half of the Champions League Group B encounter and took the lead early on, but they were made to rue their profligacy in front of goal, as a Gnabry-inspired Bayern taught woeful Spurs a lesson after the break.

Son Heung-min put Spurs deservedly in front, though Bayern were ahead by the break, with Joshua Kimmich and Robert Lewandowski netting fine strikes.

That was only the beginning, however, as Bayern went on to decimate their hosts – Gnabry scoring twice in two minutes, with Harry Kane’s penalty nothing more than a consolation.

The Croatian champions were buoyant after a 4-0 thrashing of Atalanta in their Group C opener and the visitors held firm until midway through the second half at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday.

Sterling’s close-range finish and pass for Foden to score in added time ensured Pep Guardiola’s side, who toiled without their injured playmaker Kevin De Bruyne, top the group with a maximum six points from their two games.

Security Agents Arrest ”Wanted” Maina Abdulrasheed in Abuja

The Department of State Security DSS have arrested Abdulrasheed Maina, former chairman of the Pension Reform Task Team (PRTT).

The Nation reports that Maina was arrested at a hotel in Abuja after he allegedly sneaked into the country from Dubai, United Arab Emirates. A source was quoted as saying the DSS might hand him over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for trial over his involvement in pension fraud.

“Following inter-agency collaboration, intelligence report indicated that Maina had sneaked into the country from Dubai. He was trailed to an Abuja hotel where he was arrested after operatives outwitted those who tried to ferry him away in a bullet-proof vehicle. He is currently being quizzed. He is likely to be handed over to the EFCC for trial. He has a pending case since 2015.” the source said

Recall that the Federal civil service commission had dismissed Maina in 2013 for absconding from duty following a recommendation by the office of the head of service. He was accused of being involved in pension fraud running into over N100 billion. After an investigation by the senate joint committee on public service establishment, a warrant of arrest was issued against him.

Subsequently, the police declared him wanted and he went into hiding.

However, in 2017, he returned to the country under controversial circumstances and was reinstated as a director in the ministry of interior.

Facebook to selectively pay media orgs desperate for its news tab scraps

Show appreciation for your kind and generous digital overlord.

Facebook is set to launch its latest feature, news tab, this fall — setting up yet another political battle over what media outlets are or aren’t promoted by the tech giant. While the company has taken great pains to emphasize that it will be different this time around, one thing remains eminently the same: Not all participating publishers will benefit to the same degree.

That’s because, as the Wall Street Journal reports, only roughly 25 percent of the 200 participating publications will receive any monetary compensation from the tech giant in exchange for allowing Facebook to populate its news tab with their content. The remaining 150 will apparently be doing it out of the kindness of their digital media hearts. Well, that and the hopes of raking in that sweet, sweet incoming web traffic.

We first learned about the news tab in August, with reports indicating that publications would likely be signing three-year deals with Facebook to feature their content in some way. Facebook has hired a team of real people to curate the news tab, and has reportedly established editorial guidelines for those employees to follow.

But back to the money. According to the Journal, Facebook is offering “as high as $3 million a year for national news outlets to several hundred thousand dollars for regional publications.”

Again, that’s if you’re one of the lucky ones.

Speaking of lucky, the question of which 200 publications will be featured in the news tab is worth asking. That Facebook has hired actual humans to curate the section inspires confidence, but, as with many things Facebook, we shouldn’t get ahead of ourselves.

Notably, the Journal notes that “stories from Breitbart might appear” in the news tab. For those unfamiliar with Breitbart (bless your sweet heart), the site is known as a collection of articles soaked in thinly veiled racism and bigotry that even Wikipedia says is unreliable as a news source. But hey, that’s kind of Facebook’s bread and butter.

With the specific sites getting paid by Facebook as of yet not publicly delineated, there is an actual possibility that Facebook might one day pay Breitbart for the privilege (cough) of promoting its articles.

But hey, it’s Facebook’s (news tab) world. We’re all just living in the unfortunate consequences of it.

Paxful CEO Hails Positive Trends in Organization’s African Profile

PEER-TO-PEER FINANCE PROVIDES GREATEST OPPORTUNITY FOR FINANCIAL INCLUSION

As a global digital marketplace that connects buyers and sellers of bitcoin, Paxful has, in its relatively short period of existence, already carved for itself an enviable niche. Operating as a type of escrow service, they keep both parties safe and ensure the integrity of their transactions using blockchain technology. Founded in 2015, the company has offices in New York,  Estonia, Hong Kong, and the Philippines —staffed by more than 160 dedicated employees globally.

The story of Paxful’s rise to become a foremost digital wallet through which thousands of people around the world send, receive, and store bitcoin is in many ways the story of Ray Youssef, the co-founder and chief executive officer, himself. It may be hard for most people who have benefitted from the Paxful direct-trade platform to believe, but there was a time when Youssef was eating out of dumpsters and sleeping on park benches.  His life experience, which saw him go from victim to champion of cryptocurrency trading, embodies the resilient and optimistic character underlying a company that has become one of the world’s biggest peer-to-peer digital currency exchanges. From its early days as a payment provider for small businesses, street vendors, and independent artists, Paxful has had a record of surmounting numerous challenges—among them being the apathy and incomprehension of the general buying and selling public, even in its home country, the USA, along with maximizing opportunities whenever they presented themselves.  It is this same sense of what is possible, this tenacity and belief—especially when circumstances seem to be at their most daunting—that is driving Paxful’s foray into the African marketplace, a venture which, so far, is yielding dividends beyond the imagination of even the most optimistic of Paxful’s legions of exponents and clients.

In a recent conversation, Ray Youssef addressed these opportunities, emerging possibilities, and the capacity of cryptocurrency trading to radically transform African economies.

One of the most positive features of Paxful’s operations in the African marketplace, he says,  is the ability of cryptocurrency to operate outside the existing structure of financial institutions—a situation which makes this medium extremely valuable to the unbanked, i.e. people who don’t have a bank account for depositing or sending money. Added to that is the fact that cryptocurrency is far less volatile compared to the fiat currency of some countries that experience high inflation on a periodic basis, driving market uncertainty, which is inimical to progress. This is an advantage that has become apparent to the company’s user base of over 2.5 million customers all over the world, who are able to trade thousands of bitcoin a month, which moves millions of dollars through the Paxful site on a regular basis.

Youssef believes that African markets, by their very nature, are in great need of the financial fluidity that cryptocurrencies have to offer. For example, the average African user of Paxful’s services (and especially ones that run small independent businesses) uses bitcoin as a means of payment. This is unlike their counterparts in the West, who see it purely as a store of value and a way of investing and growing their wealth. As has been the case with other disruptive financial technological innovations, Africa is currently leading the peer-to-peer financial revolution thanks to widespread enthusiasm, especially among the young and upwardly mobile who are tired of being frustrated by a system in which financial institutions are not easily accessible. The peer-to-peer finance system which Paxful embodies provides an opportunity for financial inclusion. Additionally, this system provides for a much lower barrier to entry into the bitcoin market—this is in contrast with traditional currency markets that involve various intermediaries, such as banks.

He goes on to say that nowhere else in the world has this trend gained greater momentum than in Nigeria, which has emerged as the biggest market of any country in terms of the number of Paxful users—a growth which mirrors a general trend across the continent. His organization, Youssef discloses, has learned much from Africa’s young consumers, who are on record as having the most connected 3G population on the planet. For now, Youssef admits, Paxful is playing catch-up trying to meet the growing demand by improving its own mobile capabilities to cater to the widespread use of smartphones throughout the continent.

“We are observing a new generation of young African graduates and professionals making use of peer-to-peer finance as a way to better engage the global financial system,”he says with satisfaction, adding that this phenomenal growth in recent years has largely been driven by users in the 18-30 age group. Paxful, he reiterated, is set to match their commitment to bettering lives and improving communities through education and providing access to global financial services. “We aim to empower the ‘little guys’ in any way our platform can provide,” he assures. He cites the Paxful Affiliate Program, a multi-tier program that gives Paxful affiliates 50% of the collected escrow fee for certain of their referred users’ trades on Paxful, as one of such empowerment methods designed to enable anyone, anywhere in the world, to build their own businesses.

The Paxful CEO is not unmindful of the suspicion and negative perceptions (and sometimes outright fear) that have surrounded the emergence of cryptocurrency as a viable alternative in some quarters, including in Nigeria. But it is a phenomenon that, he says, applies to all industries, especially emerging ones like cryptocurrency. While totally understandable (‘because there will always be people who will take advantage of you,’ he says), he advises cryptocurrency users to make sure that they do their research and all necessary due diligence first, in order to find out what exchange provides the services they need. “Avoid ‘too good to be true’ crypto investment opportunities,” he warns, adding that given the proliferation of scammers these days, you can only protect yourself when you are equipped with the knowledge needed to avoid them. Paxful encourages, and at certain trading levels, requires its users to submit to KYC (Know Your Customer) verification. KYC  is the process by which customers’ information is obtained to verify their true identities, ensure they are who they claim to be, and that they are legally allowed to conduct trades on the platform. Paxful also has a number of other functionalities implemented on the platform to keep users safe.

There is a type of escrow service that works by safely keeping your funds in a deposit account to protect both the buyer and the seller, locking the bitcoin until the payment has been successfully made by the buyer and received by the seller. This helps keep the transactions more secure by keeping the payment safe until all the terms have been met.

They have well-trained customer support available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to help users.

A dispute button helps users when they see or suspect that something is going wrong with their trades or when they do not go as planned—in which case a moderator intervenes to settle the trade.

‘Two-Factor Authentication’ (2FA) is also useful, Youssef says. With 2FA, users play a role in keeping their own accounts safe. Activating a 2FA on one’s account can be done through SMS text message or via Google Authenticator, which he recommends above other methods.

Youssef has also decried the ‘uncertain legislation’ prevalent in many jurisdictions in Africa. “We still don’t know the government’s position on crypto assets—if they will be considered assets similar to fiat and will be allowed to be traded and mined freely, or if any ownership and transactions will be forbidden.” He would like to see smarter regulation that accommodates the need of young Africans for financial independence, which is manifested in the side hustles they are engaging in and the remittances they are making on a daily basis. “Africans are using cryptocurrency to satisfy both personal finance needs and entrepreneurial ventures,” he says, adding that there is an emerging generation of Africans buying crypto as investment vehicles into promising blockchain startups, with a relatively small number of them already trading digital currencies speculatively for profit.

Beyond helping Africans make and trade money in a more seamless manner, as well as enabling them to engage more profitably with the global economy, Paxful and its founders have a passion for giving back to society in a way that empowers the vulnerable among us and makes a real difference in their lives. He is already spending a lot more of his time and resources working with charities. Youssef notes with satisfaction that many of these charities are accepting bitcoin donations, which enable them to gain easier access to money in local currencies through Paxful trading.

It is an initiative called #BuiltWithBitcoin, which has facilitated the construction of educational institutions in many parts of the world, including Africa—with more planned for Nigeria very soon. #BuiltWithBitcoin, which was launched with a sizable donation by Paxful to a volunteer-driven charitable organization that builds wells and schools in a number of Middle-Eastern and African countries, is just one of the charities that Paxful and its founder have focused on.

“I encourage people to get behind #BuiltWithBitcoin,” he says, adding that Paxful is looking forward to partnering with organizations that are willing to help broaden the#BuiltWithBitcoin initiative in Nigeria, as well as with potential Nigerian ambassadors of the brand, who would hold workshops and spread awareness of peer-to-peer finance among the populace.

These heroes allegedly hacked a billboard to play pornography

Not all heroes wear capes. In the case of two individuals accused of hacking a digital billboard to play pornography, the garments of choice appear to be more hoodie-like.

According to Michigan’s Auburn Hills Police Department, at 10:49 p.m. on Sept. 28, the two individuals pictured above broke into a small building underneath a digital billboard on the side of I-75. Once inside, they somehow managed to hack the billboard and used it to play pornography.

Drivers, needless to say, were surprised and delighted at the unexpected sight.

The video reportedly ran for about 15 to 20 minutes before it was eventually shut down.

“Officers arrived on scene and witnessed the video being displayed at that time,” reads the above press release. “We were able to contact an emergency contact for the private business, which operates the sign, and they were able to shut down the sign.”

Motherboard managed to identify two of the performers in the video, one of whom explained to the publication that she was mainly concerned about driver safety.

“Yes that is me, I never thought this would happen with my content,” Xev Bellringer told Motherboard. “I’m just happy that no one was injured!”

The Auburn Hills Police Department shared video of what it claimed to be the culprits on its Facebook page. Once they enter the building, one of the pranksters appears to use their phone to locate the infrared camera recording nefarious actions. They soon turn the camera toward the wall so that the remainder of their hijinks go unrecorded.

The police, for their part, are not happy.

“Promoting pornography and/or promoting pornography for minors by disseminating any pornographic material, images, videos, etc. is a violation of an Auburn Hills local ordinance with a possible penalty of 90 days in jail and/or a $500 fine,” reads the Auburn Hills Police Department press release. “These suspects now face potential burglary charges for forcing entry into the building to gain access to the computer system, which is a felony offense.”

Oh, the horror.

Frodd Uses His ‘Ultimate Veto Power’ One Last Time To Evict Diane

Entertainment Gists

By  |

Big Brother Naija Housemate, Diane has left the House after being randomly picked out from an unlucky draw.

The Task of picking Diane to leave was performed by Frodd as the second and final part of the privilege of his Ultimate Veto Power. The choice wasn’t entirely in his hands as he had to randomly pick from a magic hat.

To get the ball rolling, the Housemates were asked to fetch all their remaining Bet9ja Coins including the big gold Bet9ja Coin they were each given four weeks ago. The Housemates were asked to drop all their Bet9ja Coins in the magic hat except the big gold ones. Their ordinary Bet9ja coins had become redundant at this point. It was a good thing some of them spent theirs when they did.

Diane and Omashola wrote their names on their gold Bet9ja coins and dropped it in a magic hat with the rest of the Coins leaving Frodd with the final Ultimate Veto job of picking which Housemate to go home through an unlucky draw. It was a tense moment in the House as Frodd reached into the sac picking again and again till he eventually picked Diane.

The Final Five

After yesterday’s Eviction that saw Ike and Elozonam leaving, the Pepper Dem Gang were left with six Housemates and the Finale only had slots for five so someone had to leave. But before the process started, a few of the Pepper Dem Gang were assured of their presence in the Finale. Seyi, by virtue of winning the Head of House the previous week, secured a spot for himself in the Finale. The Immunity Mercy bought got her sitting pretty in the Finale while Mike’s public save during the Live Eviction Show guaranteed him a spot in the Finale. Diane and Omashola were the only two left without a guarantee so the decision had to be made between the two of them on who will bid the House goodbye.

Aubameyang Equaliser Condemns Man Utd To Worst Start in 30 Years

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang became the first Arsenal player to score seven or more goals in the first seven Premier League games of a season since Dennis Bergkamp in 1997-98

Manchester United and Arsenal played out a grim stalemate at Old Trafford that provided compelling evidence to illustrate just how far away from a Premier League challenge both clubs are.

In a disappointing encounter that was a pale shadow of their mighty clashes of years gone by, Scott McTominay gave Manchester United the lead at the end of an attritional first-half with a rising drive from the edge of the area.

Arsenal equalised just before the hour courtesy of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s cool finish. It was originally ruled out for offside but the video assistant referee confirmed the striker had been played onside by Harry Maguire.

Goalkeeper Bernd Leno excelled for Arsenal with fine saves from Maguire and Marcus Rashford’s late free-kick, while Bukayo Saka’s goalbound shot crucially struck Victor Lindelof and flew over the top.

McTominay also headed a great chance well over from Ashley Young’s corner but neither side could force a winner.

The result takes Arsenal into the top four but Manchester United are now down in 10th after an outcome that means they have made their worst start after seven games in 30 years, failing to reach double figures for the first time since 1989-90, a season in which they finished 13th.

How times have changed

The current circumstances of both clubs was instantly demonstrated by the two captains who led out the sides.

Manchester United’s captain was 34-year-old Ashley Young, pressed into defensive service by Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s absence through injury, and Arsenal were led by Granit Xhaka, newly appointed and a divisive figure among supporters.

Young led from the front in a fashion by regularly contesting decisions, showing a remarkable knack of getting to referee Kevin Friend in an instant on numerous occasions.

Xhaka’s night will be best remembered for his contribution to United’s goal – getting away with a foul in the build-up before appearing to take evasive action as McTominay’s drive made its way into the top corner.

There was no shortage of effort but this was a scrappy mess of a game, lacking any cohesion or quality.

United will feel they had the edge on chances, although they were grateful to David de Gea for a fine double save from Saka and Matteo Guendouzi in the first half.

Arsenal boss Unai Emery will be more satisfied than counterpart Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with a point but this showed just how far away both are from leaders Liverpool and reigning champions Manchester City – and just how much work they have to do to catch up.

Tough night for Pepe

It was no surprise when Arsenal’s club record £72m signing Nicholas Pepe failed to last the course, being substituted for Reiss Nelson after 72 minutes.

The 24-year-old signing from Lille had struggled desperately throughout and looks worryingly short of confidence so soon after his introduction into the Premier League.

Pepe had one clear shooting opportunity in the first half but skied his effort hopelessly into the Stretford End. He was on the periphery of the action in a laboured performance also littered with poor decision-making.

It was left to the lethal Aubameyang to provide the finishing touch for Arsenal, correctly assisted by VAR after technology showed he was clearly onside.

Solksjaer appeared to think the linesman’s raised flag made his players stop but it was clearly the correct decision as Maguire loitered yards behind his defensive colleagues.

Manchester United (nine) and Arsenal’s (12) combined points tally is level with league leaders Liverpool on 21

‘It is a steep learning curve’

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: “How many times have we have been 1-0 up and not got the second goal? This is a steep learning curve for us and we’ll keep working hard and, with more experience, we’ll make the right decisions.

“We didn’t get out of the blocks quick enough at the start of the second half. It felt like Arsenal were the more proactive until they scored their goal.

“I felt we could get a goal at the end and we sent men forward. I’ve been in that situation as a player when you come off and think you could’ve got more out of a game, but we’ll learn from this.”

Arsenal manager Unai Emery: “I want more – more in the result and in the performance but we are progressing. We were competitive but we can do better. We can control moments with the ball better and take more chances in the box.

“We have young players who can take confidence. Bukayo [Saka] is progressing well but we need other players too. This is not the best in terms of points but one point can be good if we win next Sunday against Bournemouth.”

Man of the match – Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Arsenal)

Aubameyang has now scored 14 goals in his last 14 starts in the Premier League for Arsenal

The best of the stats

  • Manchester United’s haul of nine points after seven games is their worst tally at this stage of a top-flight season since 1989-90 (7 points).
  • Arsenal are unbeaten in consecutive Premier League games at Old Trafford (D2) for the first time since January 2000.
  • Arsenal (5) had more shots on target than Man Utd (4) in a Premier League game at Old Trafford for the first time since May 2009 (4-0).
  • Manchester United have won 49 points from their 28 Premier League games under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – two fewer than they won in their final 28 games under Jose Mourinho.
  • McTominay’s goal was his first for Manchester United at Old Trafford, in his 25th home game for the club in all competitions.
  • Since his Manchester United debut in February 2016, Rashford has been directly involved in 71 goals for the Red Devils in all competitions (48 goals, 23 assists), eight more than any other player.
  • Saka has registered four goal involvements in just three starts for Arsenal in all competitions this season (1 goal, 3 assists).
