South African celebrities are at the forefront of the latest Nicholas Ninow outrage after SABC News shared an in-depth interview with his mother. Nicholas Ninow’s much-publicised rape case came to a conclusion two weeks ago when he was sentenced to life behind bars for sexually assaulting a seven-year-old girl in September 2018. The 21-year-old was convicted of rape, and also slapped with another five-year sentence which will run concurrently for drug possession; this came after he pled guilty to all charges.
While the case has finally come to an end, the story continued outside the courts on Monday morning when SABC News published a controversial interview with Nicholas’s mother Chantal Ninow. Chantal spoke at great lengths in a bid to defend her son from what she believes to be a public “witch hunt”. She attempted to explain his mental state and attributed his actions to a combination of drug abuse and a troubled upbringing.
Chantal began by taking responsibility for her son’s actions when she said, “I will always carry the guilt to think that my son is in jail. To think that that night I could have done something for him, but I didn’t.”
During her interview with SABC’s Chriselda Lewis, she also apologised to the victim’s family when she added, “He made a mistake and I’m sorry to that little girl’s parents and the little girl. I really am sorry.” However, the apology fell upon deaf ears. Twitter users were outraged by the SABC’s decision to air the interview in the wake of Nicholas’s sentencing, with many claiming that it was insensitive.
Among the loudest voices were some of South Africa’s celebrities who slammed the national broadcaster for what they described to be a “slap in the face” of all victims. Busiswa, Mmabatho Montsho, Anele Mdoda and Rouge were among the loudest critics on Twitter when they said:
[EXCLUSIVE] Just 10 days after Dros child rapist #NicholasNinow was sentenced to life imprisonment, his mother has spoken exclusively to me.
Parts of the interview coming up on #SABCNEWS channel 404 from a little after 5pm.

Not sure why anyone at the SABC thought we needed to hear this woman making excuses. Next thing there’ll be books and movies a la Ted Bundy etc – treating white rapists with fascination. https://t.co/ihgCXJ9MWA
