Eight finalists selected by WorldRemit and Arsenal for the “Future Stars” coaching programme

A panel of judges from Arsenal and its official online money transfer partner, WorldRemit, have selected eight coaches as finalists for their Future Stars coaching programme.

The eight finalists will now compete in a public vote on www.futurestars.worldremit.com for the chance to attend a personalised training programme with Arsenal Football Development coaches in London – sponsored by WorldRemit.

About Future Stars
The Future Stars programme was developed by WorldRemit and Arsenal to celebrate the positive impact that grassroots youth football coaches have on their communities, helping the children they train to develop life skills both on and off the pitch.

Now in its second edition, the Future Stars programme received over 1,400 online applications this year from across Africa and the Americas.

From these entries, a panel of judges selected 20 semi-finalists to receive Arsenal shirts for their youth team as recognition of their hard work within their communities.

The judging panel then narrowed these 20 semi-finalists down to eight finalist coaches – four male and four female.

Male Future Stars finalists
Bakit Isaac Agogo from Gulu, Uganda
Feisal Abdi Hassan from Nairobi, Kenya
Luis Alejandro Castañeda Vargas from Bogotá, Colombia

Samuel Taylor from Accra, Ghana
Female Future Stars finalists
Beldine Lilian Achieng Odemba from Nairobi, Kenya
Chinasa Ukandu from Lagos State, Nigeria
Joan Nabisenke from Kampala, Uganda
Vivian Johana Pirateque Garzón from Bogotá, Colombia

Two winners – one male and one female – will be chosen by a public vote to fly to London for a personalised training programme with Arsenal Football Development coaches.

Voting is now open on www.futurestars.worldremit.com until 23:59 GMT on 11th November.

Andrew Stewart, Managing Director Middle East & Africa at WorldRemit said: “Our business is all about making it easier for our customers to send money home to support their communities. Together with Arsenal, we set up the Future Stars programme to recognise football coaches within these communities who are dedicated to supporting and lifting up others.

“Our eight finalists’ stories are testament to the transformative impact that football can have on young people. We are delighted to celebrate their success and wish them all the best in the public vote!”

Simon McManus, Head Coach at Arsenal Football Development, said: “Through our community initiatives in London and abroad, we work hard to promote greater diversity in football and positively impact the lives of young people through sport.

“When developing this year’s Future Stars programme with WorldRemit, it was important for us to highlight the benefits of encouraging more women into the sport, both as players and as coaches. The eight finalists we have chosen all stood out to us due to their passion and commitment to using football to bring young people from all walks of life together.”

Citing rights violations, US cuts Cameroon trade benefits

The United States will end certain preferential trade benefits for Cameroon in January due to the country’s poor human rights record, officials said Thursday.

Under the US African Growth and Opportunity Act of 2000, legislation aimed at boosting sub-Saharan economies, countries must avoid serious human rights violations to win preferential access to US markets.

“The US government remains deeply concerned about persistent gross violations of human rights being committed by the Cameroonian government against its own citizens,” Deputy US Trade Representative C.J. Mahoney said in a statement.

The US State Department earlier this year said the conflict in western regions of the country between Cameroonian security forces and Anglophone separatists had involved arbitrary killings, enforced disappearances and torture by both sides.

The department also accused Cameroonian authorities of violence against journalists, refoulement of refugees, restrictions on internet access and failure to prevent or prosecute instances of “corrective” rape against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people, among other abuses.

Cameroonian strongman Paul Biya has been in power for 37 years.

The United States imported $220 million in Cameroonian goods last year, making the country the 112th-largest source of American merchandise imports, according to the US Trade Representative’s office.

Imports included mineral fuels, lumber, cocoa and rubber.

US exports to Cameroon last year amounted to $193 million, including machinery, iron and steel, plastics and railway equipment.

Ciara And Russell Wilson Channel Beyonce And Jay-Z For Halloween While Paying Tribute To Michelle And Barack Obama

Entertainment Gists

By  |

Ciara and Russell Wilson dressed up as Beyonce and Jay-Z for Halloween and they nailed the look.

The couple recreated one of the looks Beyonce and Jay-Z’s wore in their Apeshit video.

The original look by Bey and Jay

They didn’t stop there. They also paid tribute to Michelle and Barack Obama by replacing the Monalisa painting on the wall in Bey and Jay-Z’s photo with a portrait of the former US president and first lady.

Paying tribute to Michelle Obama and Barack Obama is believed to be an inspiration they got from another photo of Jay-Z and Beyonce. In the photo, Jay and Bey are seen paying tribute to Meghan Markle by posing with a portrait of Meghan in the background.

Sharing a photo of her and Russell channelling Beyonce and Jay-Z with the Obama’s in the background, Ciara wrote: “From the Wilsons to the Carters to the Obamas… Much Love & Respect. We goin Ape $#!% #HappyHalloween.”

Kevin Hart Breaks Silence Following Car Crash, Says it “Changed My World Forever”

Kevin Hart has spoken out for the first time since undergoing surgery after suffering an accident.

The American comedian revealed in the video shared to Instagram that his “world was changed forever” following the accident.

“I was involved in an accident. My world was forever changed,” read text at the beginning of the video.

The actor was travelling as a passenger in a 1970 Plymouth Barracuda when it crashed down an embankment above Malibu in the early hours of 1 September. The accident left him with major injuries and he had to undergo surgery. The driver of the car, Jared Black, 28, and his fiancee Rebecca Broxterman, 31, were also seriously injured in the crash.

Hart says the crash was God’s way of telling him to “sit down”.

He said in the emotional video: “Basically you realise you’re not in control. No matter how much you think you’re in control, you’re not in control. And at the end of the day it can all be over.”

In the video, Hart is seen mostly wearing a back brace. It also shows Hart’s intensive rehabilitation and recovery in the two months since the crash.

In a part of the video, the 40-year-old can be seen wearing a hospital gown and oxygen mask, while being helped to his feet by two nurses. The video also shows Hart undergoing physical therapy, and having oil applied to the scars in his back.

Hart said the accident was a “message from God”, adding: “Life is funny, because some of the craziest things that happen to you end up being the things that you needed most.

“In this case I feel that God told me to sit down. When you’re moving too fast and doing too much, sometimes you can’t see the things you’re meant to see.”

He says the accident has given him a whole new perspective on life.

“After my accident, I see things differently… My appreciation for life is through the roof,” he said.

Hart is seen in the video, spending precious time with his three kids and kissing his wife. He also thanked his family, friends and fans in the video.

He said: “I’m thankful for my family, my friends, for the people who simply ride with me and have been with me, because you stood by me. My fans – thank you for all of your love and support.”

He goes on to advise his viewers, saying: “Don’t take today for granted, because tomorrow’s not promised. More importantly, I’m thankful for God, I’m thankful for life, I’m thankful for simply still being here. The road to being a bigger and better me. I’m looking forward to an amazing 2020.”

In the video, Hart is also seen talking to a team of doctors, who tell him it will take around one year for him to fully recover.

Hart adds: “I’m not in a rush. I’m thankful for simply still being here.”

He explains that he sees his recovery as “the road to being a bigger and better version of me”, going on to say he’s “looking forward to an amazing 2020”.

Ramos Nets For 16th Straight Season As Real Cruise

Real Madrid registered their biggest win since Zinedine Zidane’s return as coach on Wednesday as they demolished struggling Leganes 5-0 to move up to second in La Liga.

Karim Benzema was the star of the show, the Frenchman rounding off a superb attacking display with a goal from the penalty spot after Rodrygo, Toni Kroos and another spot-kick from Sergio Ramos had already put Leganes out of sight. Luka Jovic added a fifth in injury-time.

Gareth Bale was absent again as he continues to recover from a calf injury but Madrid hardly missed the Welshman, whose future has again been questioned this week after he was pictured returning to London.

Zidane struck a conciliatory tone when asked about Bale on Tuesday, perhaps because he is likely to need him before the January transfer window and, if he stays, for the rest of the season too.

But Bale’s teammates flourished at the Santiago Bernabeu, albeit against a limp Leganes side, who remain rooted to the bottom of the table after sacking their coach Mauricio Pellegrino last week.

This was not a performance to recommend caretaker manager Luis Cembranos for the job long-term.

Yet there were some impressive Madrid showings nonetheless, not least from Benzema, who has been Zidane’s most consistent performer by far in recent months and now has seven goals already in all competitions.

Rodrygo, the 18-year-old making only his fourth senior appearance, came into Bale’s position on the right and, particularly in the first half, he shone, grabbing an early goal and providing the frightening turn of pace that Bale once offered before injuries took their toll.

Perhaps the only disappointment for Zidane was Eden Hazard, who still appears some way short of his best in a Madrid shirt. There were glimpses of the Belgian’s undeniable brilliance but too many moments of indecision too, that suggest he is still finding his feet, and fitness, at his new club.

Madrid’s victory keeps them just a point behind Barcelona, who thrashed Real Valladolid on Tuesday and pushes them one ahead of Atletico, with a game in hand over their city rivals.

Two goals arrived in the seventh and eight minutes and Benzema provided each of them, first keeping alive Hazard’s cross for Rodrygo to poke home before teeing up Kroos to flick in at the near post.

Leganes looked jaded, without belief or direction, and they fell three down before the interval as Hazard was brought down by Juan Soriano after a superb through ball from Casemiro.

Ramos missed the penalty but was given a second attempt, VAR prompting a re-take for the first time in La Liga after Soriano was deemed to have sprung off his line too early. This time, Ramos made no mistake.

Benzema had gone close with a bicycle kick and the energetic Fede Valverde skied high after Rodrygo had pulled back. Benzema then hit the post after a smart dummy from Hazard before finally, he got the goal he deserved after Luka Modric earned him a spot-kick with a quick turn around Omeruo. Benzema convered and then departed to a standing ovation.

Jovic was his replacement and after having one goal ruled out for offside the Serbian made his mark. Dani Carvajal’s cross offered up a simple header to make it five.

Ronaldo’s Stoppage Time Penalty Sinks Genoa

Cristiano Ronaldo converted a 96th-minute penalty as Juventus defeated Thiago Motta’s Genoa 2-1 to reclaim top spot in Serie A on Wednesday, while Napoli were left seething after conceding a disputed late equaliser against Atalanta.

Ronaldo sat out the 1-1 draw at Lecce over the weekend but Juve looked set to drop more points on his return in Turin as Christian Kouame’s fluke equaliser cancelled out a header from Leonardo Bonucci.

The Portuguese forward saw a stoppage-time strike ruled out by VAR for offside before he won a last-gasp penalty after he was fouled by Toni Sanabria.

Ronaldo drilled the spot-kick low beyond Ionut Radu for his fifth league goal of the season to send Maurizio Sarri’s Juve back above Inter Milan at the summit.

Genoa, in their second game under Motta, played most of the second half with 10 men after Francesco Cassata was sent off, while Juve substitute Adrien Rabiot was dismissed late on for two bookable offences.

Atalanta twice fought back from a goal behind to hold Napoli to a 2-2 draw at the San Paolo, where a fiery ending resulted in red cards for Carlo Ancelotti and his assistant.

Josip Ilicic struck a contentious 86th-minute equaliser that was upheld following a lengthy VAR review, as Napoli appealed for a penalty.

Napoli forward Fernando Llorente tumbled to the ground after jostling with Simon Kjaer in the Atalanta area before the visitors countered and scored through Ilicic.

A five-minute interruption followed before the referee awarded the goal without reviewing the incident on the touchline monitor.

“I consider what happened an attack on my professionalism, my players and my club,” Ancelotti said.

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis was livid with the officiating.

“If there is VAR it’s pointless creating eight minutes of additional time because all that happens is pushing and shouting,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“And what is this buffoonery from the referee who kicks out a gentleman like Ancelotti?

“We’re fed up. Without us the referees would be peeling potatoes. We’re tired of paying for this standard of refereeing.”

ROMA, LAZIO MOVE ABOVE NAPOLI
Nikola Maksimovic had headed Napoli into the lead on 16 minutes, but Remo Freuler levelled just before halftime when his shot squirmed through goalkeeper Alex Meret.

Polish striker Arkadiusz Milik hit the post and crossbar before putting Napoli back on top on 71 minutes when he raced onto a Fabian Ruiz pass and rounded Pierluigi Gollini.

However, Ilicic levelled and nearly grabbed a winner in stoppage time for Atalanta, who stayed third but now trail leaders Juve by five points.

“From the pitch, I thought it was a penalty. Then, seeing the images, I saw a big elbow to Kjaer’s face,” Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini said of the passage of play that led to his team’s controversial equaliser.

“The images are very clear. Whoever was in the VAR booth confirmed what the referee saw, but I’m rightly biased.”

Roma climbed above Napoli into fourth after a 4-0 rout of Udinese despite losing Federico Fazio to a red card on 31 minutes.

Nicolo Zaniolo opened the scoring before the dismissal of Fazio for a foul as the last defender.

Chris Smalling doubled Roma’s lead early in the second half with a Justin Kluivert goal and Aleksandar Kolarov penalty wrapping up victory.

Ciro Immobile struck twice to take his league-leading tally to 12 goals as Lazio swept Torino aside 4-0.

Cagliari extended their unbeaten run to eight games with a 3-2 win over Bologna while Fiorentina came from behind to defeat Sassuolo 2-1.

Sampdoria remain rooted to the foot of the table despite Gaston Ramirez salvaging a 1-1 draw with an injury-time equaliser at home to Lecce.

Monfils ousts fellow Frenchman Paire to reach last 16 at Paris Masters

Gael Monfils advanced to the last 16 of the Paris Masters on Wednesday following a straight sets victory over his fellow Frenchman Benoit Paire. Monfils, seeded 13th, claimed the second round tie 6-4, 7-6 and will next play Radu Albot from Moldavia.

His victory in front of an enthralled centre court at the Accorhotels Arena in Bercy keeps him in the hunt for one of the two places remaining for the men’s end of season championships in London in November.

Alex Zverev and Matteo Berrettini are ahead of him in the race for the event between 10 and 17 November.

“People keep talking to me about the Masters,” said Monfils. “My main goal is to reach the top 10 at the end of the year.

“I’m close to the championships in London and still far away and there’s all this pressure. It’s not good to play with so much pressure.”

Steady
Monfils broke Paire’s resistance at the end of the first set and capitalised on some wayward forehands to pocket the tiebreak in the second set.

“He’s a lot more serious on the court this season,” said Paire of Monfils. “He seems a lot more intense about what he’s doing and he seems to want to do good things. I hope he manages to get to London.”

Top seed Novak Djokovic is among the six players already booked in for the championships. The Serb advanced to the last 16 following a 7-6, 6-4 triumph over the local hero Corentin Moutet.

Mozambique opposition files suit against massive electoral fraud.

Mozambique’s largest opposition party Renamo on Wednesday lodged court papers calling for the October 15 election results to be annulled due to “massive electoral fraud”.

Renamo, the rebel group turned opposition party, lost the election to the long-ruling Frelimo party, securing under 22 percent of the vote, the electoral commission announced Sunday.

Incumbent President Filipe Nyusi of Frelimo, won a fresh five-year term.

Having previously called for the election to be annulled, the opposition submitted an official complaint to the National Electoral Commission (CNE) to be judged by the constitutional council.

“With this complaint we take on also all the misconduct that took place during the elections, and its evidence is well documented,” Renamo’s national spokesman, Venancio Mondlane told journalists outside the National Election Commission (CNE) headquarters in Maputo after submitting the complaint.

“The results of the elections are null and void.”

Renamo has accused the government of “massive electoral fraud” and breaching the country’s peace deal by using violence and intimidation on voting day.

The lower courts have so far convicted 158 people over electoral misconduct, while at least 140 more are still awaiting trial.

Fourteen of those convicted were arrested for ballot box stuffing.

‘Ghost voters’

At least 58 electoral irregularity complaints, by Frelimo, Renamo and the Democratic Movement of Mozambique submitted over election fraud were rejected by the district courts in the provinces of Nampula, Maputo, Sofala, the Supreme court said this week.

Of those rejected, six cases were sent to the constitutional court to seek further judgement.

Supreme court spokesman Pedro Nhatitima said the majority of the queries were thrown out of court because they weren’t lodged within the legal deadline of 48 hours of the election results being posted.

Mozambican civil society and international observers have flagged numerous alleged attempts to stuff ballot boxes and chase away election monitors, as well as hundreds of thousands of so-called “ghost voters” on the electoral roll.

The Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa (EISA) said it was regrettable that irregularities in voter registration had not been addressed before the elections.

Mozambique has seen one of its most violent election campaigns ever.

At least 10 people were killed in the run-up to the polls, according to a local observer mission.

Among the killings was the murder of a prominent election observer — suspected to have been carried out by a special police unit — and that of the Renamo Women’s League leader, whose bullet-ridden body was found with her husband’s in the western province of Tete.

Frelimo, which has ruled Mozambique since independence from Portugal in 1975, has hailed the elections as free and fair.

Observers from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) also approved of the election, saying the run-up to the vote and the balloting itself were “generally peaceful and conducted in an orderly manner”.

Despite numerous opposition party complaints, SADC observers have also endorsed elections in Malawi, Zimbabwe and Botswana in recent months, declaring them all to be free and fair.

Frelimo and Renamo, which fought a brutal civil war from 1975-1992 that left one nearly million people dead, signed a peace deal in August hoping to turn the page on decades of conflict.

Rashford Stunner Sends Man United Through Against Chelsea

Marcus Rashford stopped a resurgent Chelsea in their tracks as his sensational free-kick fired Manchester United into the League Cup quarter-finals with a 2-1 victory at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

Rashford sent his dipping effort from around 40 metres flying past Chelsea keeper Willy Caballero in the 73rd minute after Michy Batshuayi’s well-taken equaliser.

United, who were at near full-strength, had led at halftime through Rashford’s penalty after speedy Welshman Daniel James had been fouled by Marcos Alonso.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side held out reasonably comfortably to claim a third successive away victory having previously not won on the road since March.

It was United’s second win over Chelsea this season, having beaten them 4-0 on the opening day of the Premier League.

Since then Frank Lampard’s youthful Chelsea side have responded superbly and had won their last seven matches in all competitions to move into the Premier League’s top four.

The draw for the quarter-finals is on Thursday in which United will be joined by Manchester City, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Leicester City, Everton, Colchester United and Oxford.

Liverpool Beat Arsenal After 10-Goal Thriller

Liverpool’s dramatic penalty shootout victory over Arsenal sealed their place in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup after 10 goals were scored in a thrilling contest at Anfield.

Celebrations broke out in front of the Kop after Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, 20, saved Dani Ceballos’ penalty to seal a 5-4 shootout win.

Divock Origi’s 94th-minute scissor kick sent the game to penalties after Liverpool had twice come from behind to draw level.

Arsenal’s Joe Willock thought he had given his side a memorable victory with a sensational long-range strike in the second half but there was more to come on an unforgettable night at Anfield.

The celebrations were wild from Liverpool’s players at full-time as teenager Curtis Jones coolly thumped the final penalty in off the post to make it five from five in front of the Kop.

Arsenal were minutes away from victory after Joe Willock’s stunning long-range effort had put them 5-4 up, before Origi pulled off what seemed the inevitable in stoppage time.

Liverpool led just once during the match and that was after five minutes when Shkodran Mustafi slid in and diverted the ball into his own net.

Midfielder Mesut Ozil, given just his third start of the season, then set-up Bukayo Saka, whose shot was rebounded in by Lucas Torreira to make it 1-1.

Teenager Gabriel Martinelli continued his impressive goalscoring form, pouncing on a loose ball at the near post before slotting in from Saka’s pass to make it 3-1 to Arsenal.

But Liverpool cut their lead to one goal on the stroke of half-time through James Milner’s penalty after Harvey Elliott – who became the youngest Liverpool player to start at Anfield (16 years, 209 days) – went down in the box under minimal contact from Martinelli.

It took just nine minutes for the goals to start flowing again in the second half, when Milner uncharacteristically gave the ball away in his own area and Ozil teed up Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain fired in an excellent long-range effort for Liverpool and Origi’s smart turn and powerful finish made it 4-4 – all this before Willock and Origi’s late goals left the teams level at 5-5.

Real Madrid Close Gap On Barca With Easy Win

Substitute Luka Jovic scored his first goal for Real Madrid since joining from Eintracht Frankfurt for a reported 60m euros in the summer

Real Madrid moved within a point of La Liga leaders Barcelona by returning to winning ways with a routine home victory against struggling Leganes.

After Brazilian teenager Rodrygo tapped in, Toni Kroos doubled the tally with a clinical finish about 90 seconds later.

Skipper Sergio Ramos extended the lead with a retaken penalty after his initial effort was saved.

Karim Benzema rolled in another penalty after the break before Luka Jovic opened his Real account with a header.

Zinedine Zidane’s side, who did not play at the weekend after El Clasico was postponed because of civil unrest in Catalonia, made the perfect response to losing at Malaga in their previous league outing.

Madrid started at a high tempo against their city rivals, who earned their first league win of the season against Malaga on Saturday following former Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino’s departure, and there was little doubt about the outcome once once they moved 2-0 ahead after just eight minutes.

Skipper Ramos was rather fortunate to be allowed another chance to score from the spot when Leganes goalkeeper Juan Soriano was adjudged to have moved off his line before saving a weak first attempt.

Although Leganes rallied after the break, the home side always had complete control and two more goals in the final 20 minutes gave a fairer reflection of their overall dominance.

Benzema, who set up the first two goals, deservedly got on the scoresheet himself before his second-half replacement Jovic headed in a pinpoint cross from Dani Carvajal in stoppage time.

Twitter’s new ad policy prompts politicians to call out Facebook

Jack Dorsey took a swing at Mark Zuckerberg, and politicians took note.

On Wednesday the Twitter CEO announced a new policy governing political advertisements — namely, that in contrast to Facebook, his company would no longer accept them. In doing so, he specifically alluded to Zuckerberg’s defense of allowing political figures to pay to spread misinformation. Elected officials, both past and present, seized the opportunity to pile on.

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweeted that Twitter’s move was a “good call,” before adding that “Not allowing for paid disinformation is one of the most basic, ethical decisions a company can make.”

Notably, Ocasio-Cortez recently beefed with Zuckerberg over his company’s controversial political ads policy. On Oct. 23, the congresswoman embarrassed the CEO by pressing him on whether his company’s ad policy would allow her to run paid posts falsely claiming Republicans supported the Green New Deal.

His fumbled response was widely mocked, and the entire thing became the stuff of memes.

But the congresswoman from New York wasn’t the only one to get in on the fun. The campaign of former vice president and current primary candidate for the Democratic party nomination for president, Joe Biden, also weighed in on Twitter’s move.

In a statement shared by the New York TimesKate Conger, Biden’s camp used the opportunity to obliquely criticize Facebook.

“[When] faced with a choice between ad dollars and the integrity of our democracy,” read the statement in part, “it is encouraging that, for once, revenue did not win out.”

Oh, and look who else got in on the fun.

“This is the right thing to do for democracy in America and all over the world,” wrote Hillary Clinton. “What say you, @Facebook?”

Of course, not everyone was happy. The campaign manager for Trump’s 2020 re-election campaign, Brad Parscale, demonstrated a fundamental lack of understanding of the english language by claiming a policy banning all political advertising on Twitter — regardless of the party running it — specifically targeted Trump.

“Twitter bans political ads in yet another attempt by the left to silence Trump and conservatives,” wrote the tragically simpleminded Parscale.

Dorsey, it would appear, had other thoughts on the matter.
