Wikipedia citations get way more legit with the addition of books

Everyone knows that to legitimize anything you read on Wikipedia, the crowd-sourced online encyclopedia, you need to scroll to the bottom of the page and check out the references, notes, and citations (or click the little footnote link in the text).

The Internet Archive, known for its Wayback Machine, will now be a resource for book-based citations if that text exists within its library. Previously, only citations linking back to an online source were viewable. Now, some book references will be available online as well.

In a Tuesday post about “weaving books into the internet,” the San Francisco-based non-profit explained how it was taking digitized versions of books and matching them with corresponding Wikipedia citations, so long as those citations reference specific page numbers.

That means you don’t simply have to trust that some fact about Daylight Saving Time really was sourced from the book listed. Now you can see why the Wikipedia entry seems so sure about how ancient Romans kept time.

The book previews are hosted on archive.com and provide context ofnwhere whatever fact, quote, or tidbit came from. Right down to the chapter, preceding paragraphs, and in some cases the entire book. You can also borrow digital copies of certain books.

By the numbers, the Internet Archive has already linked 130,000 book references on Wikipedia to 50,000 digital books. It’s planning to keep it going. But it costs the non-profit about $20 per book for the digital transformation.

Google Books is another book sourcing option if you’re interested in taking more of a DIY approach, since it’s not linked to Wikipedia citations. You still have to manually search for a reference material and see if Google has a copy scanned.

Wikipedia can feel like a dubious source because so many people contribute and there’s so much potential for inaccuracy, but now we’ve got even more receipts.

Hamilton Wins Sixth Formula 1 World Championship At United States Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton sealed his sixth world drivers’ title with second place in the United States Grand Prix.

The result means Hamilton becomes the second most successful F1 driver of all time – moving him to within one championship of all-time record-holder Michael Schumacher, whose tally of seven is now within his reach.

Hamilton failed in a valiant attempt to win the race by trying a different strategy to Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas but that did not matter such was his points advantage.

Hamilton held off Max Verstappen for second as Bottas stroked to victory.

Hamilton had said before the race that he was not thinking of sealing the championship in Austin, Texas, only of winning the race, and he drove with the fierce competitive instinct that has defined his season and career.

His decision to run long, do a single pit stop and try to hold off his rivals at the end did not quite work out – Bottas passed him with three laps to go – but it was a drive befitting the towering achievement he was to secure at the end of the race.

Hamilton’s sixth title has also moved him clear of the legendary Argentine Juan Manuel Fangio.

“It’s just overwhelming,” he said. “It was such a tough race. Yesterday was a tough day. I really just wanted recover and deliver the one-two. I didn’t think the one-stop was going to be possible. I am filled with so much emotion. It is an honour to be up there with those greats.

“My dad told me when I was six or seven years old to never give up. I was hopeful I might be able to win but I didn’t have it in the tyres.”

Asked what he could go on to achieve in his career, Hamilton said: “I don’t know about championships but as an athlete I feel fresh as can be. We won’t let up, we’ll keep pushing.”

Hamilton has secured the championship with 10 victories out of the 19 races held so far this season, with two remaining in Brazil and Abu Dhabi.

How Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez Kayoed Sergey Kovalev To Win WBO Light-Heavyweight Title

Mexican great Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez further added to his legacy by taking the WBO light-heavyweight crown from Sergey Kovalev with a devastating 11th-round knockout in Las Vegas.

Middleweight king Canelo, 29, had stepped up two weight divisions to face the 36-year-old Russian.

It proved a close fight which failed to ignite before an explosive combination from Canelo ended Kovalev’s night.

Canelo has now won world titles in four weight divisions.

A cagey encounter at the MGM Grand appeared to be heading to a 12th round and one for the judges to decide before a left hook-right hand combination came from nowhere and left Kovalev floundering on the ropes.

Judges had Canelo slightly ahead at that point on their scorecards.

Gov’t To Push $600m Into Cocoa Sector

An amount of US$600 million is expected to be injected into the cocoa sector.

According to the Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, the amount is to among other things help push Ghana’s cocoa production to 1.5 million tones by 2027.

“The Akufo-Addo administration acting through COCOBOD will inject a 600 million USD stimulus package into the cocoa sector through a Cocoa Productivity Enhancement Program which will among other things step up Ghana’s production to 1.5 million tones by 2027.”

He said the stimulus will target rehabilitation of plantations, improvement in storage and domestic processing, stimulation of local consumption as well as efforts to increase output on farms among others within a 7-year period.

“The [Akufo-Addo] Administration believes that Cocoa, being a major pillar of our economy cannot be allowed to survive at its own pace. Cocoa farmers who have been the backbone of the Ghanaian economy already have good news for 2020 in cocoa price structure but now get an additional dose through this stimulus package.”

The Minister disclosed this when he addressed the press on Sunday briefing them on some decisions taken at Cabinet’s Retreat which has been in session at the Peduase lodge since last Thursday.

The meetings chaired by President Nana Akufo-Addo, according to Oppong Nkrumah, focused on examining the results of the governments efforts at correcting the economic challenges inherited at the start of the administration’s work.

“It has also been focused on laying down some red lines in the preparation of the 2020 budget.”

“The President and Cabinet are upbeat about ending the year on a high fiscal and economic performance and delivering a budget for 2020 which will help consolidate the gains made so far for our continued growth and prosperity agenda. Mr President is currently heading to the Volta Region to start from tomorrow to Tuesday night, his 2-day tour of the Volta Region,” he added.

Pedestrians Still Dodge Footbridges Despite Recent Arrests

More pedestrians are still using the speedways and crossing the road at unauthorized places at Madina Zongo Junction, at the risk of their lives, leaving the newly constructed footbridge idle.

A visit by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) to the site on Friday showed that many pedestrians were avoiding the use of the footbridge.

Those who spoke to the Ghana News Agency said the footbridge was too high and that they got scared when climbing it.

Ms Regina Gyeketey, a pedestrian, said although she used the footbridge every morning, its height put fear in her and she had to drink a sachet of water before climbing it.

She said despite the fear, she used it because it was safer than crossing the road using the speedways, noting that the motor accidents had become rampant on that stretch so she would not risk it.

She said it would be prudent if the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) of the Police Servcie resumed its operation of arresting pedestrians who crossed the road at unauthorized places.

Mr Kusi Baah, another pedestrian, said, to ensure the use of the footbridge, the MTTD ought to keep arresting individual pedestrians who refused to use it.

“We should save the lives of those crossing wrongly by continuously arresting them.”

Madam Mavis Owusua, who crossed through the traffic light with about a four-year old child, said she normally used the footbridge but crossed the speedway because the cars had stopped on the indication of the traffic light.

“I am a regular user of the footbridge since it was opened but for today”.

Mr David Kondor, a Media Consultant to the World Bank, said there was no justification for people to refuse to use the bridge.

However, he said, the Engineers should have considered the practical needs of the users, adding that the excuse of height was frivolous and urged the public to adopt to its usage to ensure their safety.

The GNA found that it takes an average of three minutes to cross the footbridge from the base while a pedestrian could spend an average of five to 10 minutes waiting to cross the speedways at the risk of their lives.

In recent times, residents of Adentan and Madina had protested the six uncompleted footbridges on the stretch, complaining about the many lives lost crossing the speedways.

Police had earlier arrested 110 pedestrians for jaywalking on the stretch.

Moody’s downgrades SA credit rating to negative

On Saturday, the announcement by the rating agency Moody’s to keep the country one notch above investment grade from stable to negative.

The DA said the decision was not unexpected. The party’s Dion George said: “As we saw from Minister Mboweni’s speech in Parliament… he certainly said the right things like cutting the public sector wage bill, but if you look into the numbers going into the next three years, you can see that absolutely nothing is being done to it.”

Meanwhile, Finance Minister Tito Mboweni has acknowledged Moody’s rating with a heavy heart, saying he hoped for a different outcome.

“Fellow South Africans now is the time to roll up our sleeves and do what we have to do. It’s now or never. We need all hands on deck. Government, labour, business and civil society, we need each other now more than ever. The country is ours and it is only us who can turn it around,” Mboweni said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Business Unity South Africa (Busa) said it was not surprised by Moody’s announcement.

Busa president Sipho Pityana said they warned for months that the country needed drastic and fundamental action on key economic issues.

EPL: Guardiola calls Mane “a diver” ahead of Man City’s trip to Liverpool

Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, has branded Liverpool’s Sadio Mane “a diver” ahead of their meeting this weekend.

Mane scored a last-gasp winner in the Reds’ 2-1 victory over Aston Villa on Saturday.

The victory ensured Jurgen Klopp’s men remain six points clear of City at the top of the table.

The Senegal international also picked up a booking for diving at Villa Park.

And Guardiola, speaking after City’s 2-1 win over Southampton, took a swipe at the forward.

“It’s happened a lot for Liverpool in the last years [scoring late on]. It’s because he’s a special talent,” Guardiola said of Mane on the BBC.

“Sometimes he’s diving, sometimes he has this talent to score incredible goals in the last minute. He’s a talent.

“If it’s one time, two times, ‘we were lucky, we were lucky’, but it happened in the last two seasons many, many times – they have a special character to do that.

“We look at ourselves, we know which team we face, I think they have won 10 and drawn one. Next week we go to Anfield to try to play them.”

New Zealand beat England by 21 runs to level T20 series

New Zealand beat England by 21 runs to level the Twenty20 series at 1-1 in Wellington.

Chasing 177, England slipped to 3-2 after eight balls before being bowled out for 155 despite Dawid Malan’s 39 and Chris Jordan’s 19-ball 36 late on.

The returning Jimmy Neesham made 42 off 22 deliveries and Martin Guptill 41 in New Zealand’s 176-8, with Jordan taking 3-23 and Sam Curran 2-22.

The third game of the five-match series is in Nelson at 01:00 GMT on Tuesday.

England, who have rested several first-choice players, restricted the Black Caps to what felt like a below-par total, despite dropping five catches, after winning the toss.

Although the pitch had more pace than the one in the series opener in Christchurch and the square boundaries were short, it never felt like England were in control of the chase.

New Zealand spinners Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodhi were impressive, taking a combined 5-62 from eight overs.

After handing debuts to three players in the seven-wicket win on Friday, England gave Lancashire pace bowler Saqib Mahmood his first cap in place of Tom Curran.

Mahmood, bowling in the powerplay and death overs, finished with 1-46 from four overs.

Having conceded 15 from his first over, he fought back well in his second by having Tim Seifert caught behind attempting to ramp.

Mahmood’s final two overs, the 17th and 19th of the innings, went for 11 and 15 respectively, although he regularly found the block hole.

Fellow seamer Pat Brown, who took 1-33 on debut in the series opener, conceded 32 from two overs.

After not bowling or batting in the first game, Lewis Gregory struck with his first ball in international cricket as he nipped one back to bowl the dangerous Colin de Grandhomme, who made 28 from 12 balls.

While not new to international cricket, it was only Sam Curran’s second T20 international appearance and he was again impressive in taking 2-22.

England will be disappointed with the quality of their fielding, however. Three of the five dropped catches were fairly routine, with James Vince spilling two simple chances and an extremely tough one.

Guptill, who made two from seven balls in the first T20, showed glimpses that he was finding the rhythm again during his 28-ball innings.

Strong down the ground and through the on the side, he gave New Zealand’s innings impetus at the top of the order, something that was missing on Friday.

All-rounder Neesham had not featured in a T20 international since January 2017, but his impressive 50-over World Cup this summer – when he scored 232 runs and took 15 wickets – earned him a recall.

Based on Sunday’s display, New Zealand has to find a way to get him into their side regularly.

Particularly strong on the leg side, left-handed Neesham also played one gorgeous inside-out shot over extra-cover off Mahmood that demonstrated his undeniable quality.

His contribution was integral to the Kiwis posting a target that proved comfortably beyond England.

IS claims responsibility for deadly Mali attacks on 50 soldiers

The Islamic State on Saturday claimed responsibility for a devastating raid that killed 49 Malian troops as well as a blast that led to the death of a French soldier who became the latest casualty in the conflict-torn region.

The strikes underscored the fragility of an area straddling several West African countries battling increasing jihadist violence that has claimed hundreds of lives.

Friday’s assault on a Malian military outpost at Indelimane in the eastern Menaka region near Niger killed 49 soldiers, wounded three and left 20 survivors, the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) said Saturday.

“Soldiers of the caliphate attacked a military base where elements of the apostate Malian army were stationed in the village of Indelimane,” the IS said in a statement on its social media channels.

On Saturday, French corporal Ronan Pointeau, 24, died after an armoured vehicle in which he was travelling hit an improvised explosive device (IED) near the city of Menaka, a French defence ministry statement said.

The IS late Saturday also claimed responsibility for that, saying its fighters had “detonated an explosive device on a French army convoy in the Indelimane area”.

Pointeau and his colleagues were escorting a convoy between the cities of Gao and Menaka.

“This insidious attack shows the importance and bitterness of the fight against armed terrorist groups” in the border region straddling Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso, the French defence ministry said.

French Armed Forces Minister Florence Parly said she would be “visiting Mali very soon to hold discussions with Malian authorities.”

President Emmanuel Macron paid tribute to Pointeau and expressed solidarity with the French and African troops fighting in the region.

The Malian government initially said 53 people died in what it described as a “terrorist attack” at Indelimane.

An army officer said troops arrived at the outpost around 5:00 pm on Friday and “took back control of our positions.

“The terrorists carried out a surprise attack at lunchtime. Army vehicles were destroyed, others taken away,” he told AFP.

The attacks came a month after two jihadist assaults killed 40 soldiers near the border with Burkina Faso. Several sources have said the real death toll was higher.

MINUSMA, the UN mission in Mali, condemned the raid and said its peacekeepers were helping Malian troops secure the region.

‘We can resist’

“This bloodshed that Mali has been living through cannot go on,” imam Mahamound Dicko, an influential religious leader in Mali, said.

“Do you want us to resign ourselves to this suffering? We can resist,” he added.

Rights activist Alioune Tine, from Mali’s western neighbour Senegal, called for action across Africa to tackle the threat.

“If Africa does not mobilise for Mali and Burkina (Faso), it won’t be spared the bushfire that is quickly catching West Africa’s coastal countries, the next chosen targets” of the jihadists, he said.

The violence has also spilled over into Burkina Faso and Niger where extremists have exploited existing inter-communal strife, leaving hundreds dead.

In Mali, the attacks have spread from the arid north to its centre, an ethnically mixed and explosive region.

The recent assaults are a humiliation for the so-called G5 Sahel force — a much-trumpeted initiative under which five countries created a joint 5,000-man anti-terror force — and for former colonial ruler France, which is helping to bring security to the fragile region.

Northern Mali came under the control of Al-Qaeda linked jihadists after Mali’s army failed to quash a rebellion there in 2012.

A French-led military campaign was launched against the jihadists, pushing them back a year later.

But the jihadists have regrouped and widened their hit-and-run raids and landmine attacks to central and southern Mali.

UN chief warns impunity for crimes against journalists on the rise

United Nation Secretary General has warned of a rise in the scale and number of attacks against media workers in recent years, on the International Day to End Impunity against Journalists. Antonio Guterres urged the world to “stand up together for journalists, for truth and for justice”.

The UN General Assembly designated 2 November as the International Day to End Impunity against Journalists after RFI journalists Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon were abducted and killed on that date in 2013 in northern Mali.

The circumstances surrounding their death remain unclear and none of the alleged perpetrators have been arrested.

“When journalists are targeted, societies as a whole pay a price,” said Guterres. “Without the ability to protect journalists, our ability to remain informed and contribute to decision-making, is severely hampered.”

According to official statistics more than 1,000 journalists have been killed worldwide in the world in the past 12 years. Not just in warzones, but also at their homes, including in peaceful western countries.

In 2018, 94 journalists and media workers were killed while doing their jobs, according to the International Federation of Journalists.

Forty-four have died so far this year, with crimes going unpunished in nine out of 10 cases.

Rise in crimes against women
Guterres said there had been a recent rise in the number of women journalists among fatalities in recent years, along with an increase in gender-based violence, such as sexual harassment and sexual assault.

Reporters Without Borders, or RSF, highlighted the case of Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, assassinated on 16 October 2016 by a car bomb.

Caruana Galizia was one of the most prominent journalists in her country, having made her name investigating high-profile corruption, including with the Panama Papers.

RSF qualified her murder as “previously unthinkable in an EU state”.

October also marked one year since the brutal murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi at Riyad’s consulate in Istanbul.

“A shocking state crime,” said RSF. “Thirteen months later, the journalist’s dismembered body has yet to be found, those who instigated his murder have yet to be put on trial, and the Saudi regime continues to persecute journalists with exceptional ferocity.”

#KeepTruthAlive
UNESCO this year launched the #KeepTruthAlive campaign on social media to highlight the dangers faced by journalists close to their homes. Some 93% of journalists killed in 2019 were local workers.

As part of the campaign, Unesco created an interactive map which gives an idea of the scale of dangers faced by the world’s media workers.

She added that “The vacuum created in our heart would be difficult to find a replacement”.

Below is the full statement:

NPP WESTERN REGIONAL WOMEN’S WING – MOURNS LATE MR MARK OFORI

We are with much pain, sorrow and wailing to mourn and sympathize with sudden demise of late Mark Ofori; the treasurer for Takoradi Constituency.

The party has lost a vibrant leader, the vacuum created in our heart would be difficult to find a replacement. We are in deep pain and as Women’s wing of the party, we share the pain with your family, friends, church members, colleague workers, the clergy, party faithful and the entire Takoradi Constituency Executives.

In fact, we didn’t think life would be too brief under this sun but we can take comfort from the good book which says:

Behold, I tell you a mystery: we shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed – in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the DEAD will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruptible, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible has put on incorruptible, then shall be brought to pass the saying that it written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” – Corinthians 15:52 – 56.

It is our prayer that, our God Almighty shall keep you in His Bosom till we all meet again in eternity.

Rest well Bro Mark!!

Rest in Abraham’s Bosom!!!

Nantsew Yie Bro Mark!!!

Ewuradze mfa wo kra nsie yie!!!!

Signed!

Abena Kwallah

WR Women’s Organizer

Don’t Attempt To Bribe Ghanaians In 2020 – Kwadwo Twum Boafo Warns NPP

The Former Executive Secretary of the Ghana Free Zones Board, Kwadwo Twum – Boafo has cautioned the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) not to attempt to bribe the electorates with state monies and resources in the upcoming 2020 general elections.

He was speaking on the Alhaji and Alhaji political talk show on Pan African TV on November 2, 2019.

The outspoken National Democratic Congress (NDC) member intimated that, “This government should not wait for next year to attempt to bribe the electorate because the electorate is wise. Whenever you talk about anything related to their overspending, this government will tell you, we are doing Free Senior High School (FSHS).”

He also stressed that the President’s alleged renting of a private jet to fly around at $17,000 an hour instead of using the country’s own Presidential Jet is an absolute waste of the Ghanaian tax payer’s money and it is a terrible precedence for future governments.

“It’s a terrible example for future governments that we already have a Presidential Jet in this country and the President and his government decide that they are going to allocate themselves 4 times the amount of money that President Mahama allocated to the Presidency so that they can use it to fly around in private jets.”

“They said they were going to do something about corruption. This government is sitting on 111 scandals. Every single week, there is a new scandal,” he concluded.
